Conventional cellular systems efficiency is currently being challenged by the continuously changing and more demanding world of mobile services and communications. The major problems in conventional cellular communication systems are the limited autonomy of battery-powered mobile devices and the low data rate of currently available services. In this work a viable solution is presented to overco...

The observable properties of a Type Ia supernova are sensitive to how the nuclear runaway ignites in a Chandrasekhar mass white dwarf at a single point at its center, off-center, or at multiple points and times. We present a simple analytic model for the runaway based upon a combination of stellar mixing-length theory and recent advances in understanding RayleighBenard convection. The convectiv...

A hanging glacier at the east face of Weisshorn broke off in 2005. We were able to monitor and measure surface motion and icequake activity for 21 days up to three days prior to the break-off. Results are presented from the analysis of seismic waves generated by the glacier during the rupture maturation process. Three types of precursory signals of the imminent catastrophic rupture were identif...

We study bottomonium production in heavy-ion collisions using a transport model which utilizes kinetic-rate and Boltzmann equations to calculate the energy, centrality and transverse-momentum (pT ) dependence of the yields. Both gluodissociation and inelastic parton-induced break-up including interference effects are improved over previous work by using in-medium binding energies from a thermod...

To clear pathogens from host tissues or biomaterial surfaces, phagocytes have to break the adhesive bacteria-substrate interactions. Here we analysed the mechanobiological process that enables macrophages to lift-off and phagocytose surface-bound Escherichia coli (E. coli). In this opsonin-independent process, macrophage filopodia hold on to the E. coli fimbriae long enough to induce a local pr...

The afterglow emission that follows gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) contains valuable information about the circumburst medium and, therefore, about the GRB progenitor. Theoretical studies of GRB blast waves, however, are often limited to simple density profiles for the external medium (mostly constant density and power-law R−k ones). We argue that a large fraction of long-duration GRBs should take pla...

We report first clear evidence for the simultaneous presence of a low frequency break and a QPO in the power spectrum of a well known ultralumnious X-ray source (ULX) in M82 using long XMMNewton observations. The break occurs at a frequency of 34.2 −3 mHz. The QPO has a centroid at νQPO = 114.3± 1.5 mHz, a coherence Q ≡ νQPO/∆νFWHM ≃ 3.5 and an amplitude (rms) of 19% in the 2− 10 keV band. The ...

fertilizer plant waste carbon slurry has been investigated after some processing as an adsorbent for the removal of dyes and phenols using columns. the results show that the carbonaceous adsorbent prepared from carbon slurry being porous and having appreciable surface area (380 m2/g) can remove dyes both cationic (meldola blue, methylene blue, chrysoidine g, crystal violet) as well as anionic (...

the main objective of this article is to optimize the walking pattern of a 2d humanoid robot with heel-off and toe-off motions in order to minimize the energy consumption and maximize the stability margin. to this end, at first, a gait planning method is introduced based on the ankle and hip joint position trajectories. then, using these trajectories and the inverse kinematics, the position tra...
