While philosophers have, for centuries, pondered upon the relation between mind and brain, neuroscientists have only recently been able to explore the connection analytically — to peer inside the black box. This ability stems from recent advances in technology and emerging neuroimaging modalities. It is now possible not only to produce remarkably detailed images of the brain’s structure (i.e. a...

Proof. ‖∇F (δ)‖∞ ≤ guarantees that μ = μ(δ) are -consistent in the sense that |μi(xi) − μc(xi)| ≤ for all c, i ∈ c and xi. Algorithm 1 maps any such -consistent μ to locally consistent marginals μ̃ such that |μi(xi)− μ̃i(xi)| ≤ 3 Nmax, |μc(xc)− μ̃c(xc)| ≤ 2 N max, (3) for all i, xi, c, and xc, where Nmax = max{maxiNi,maxcNc}. In other words, ‖μ− μ̃‖∞ ≤ K . This can be easily derived from the update...

Results of resonance searches in the Xi(-)pi(-), Xi(-)pi(+), Xi;(+)pi(-), and Xi;(+)pi(+) invariant mass spectra in proton-proton collisions at sqrt[s]=17.2 GeV are presented. Evidence is shown for the existence of a narrow Xi(-)pi(-) baryon resonance with mass of 1.862+/-0.002 GeV/c(2) and width below the detector resolution of about 0.018 GeV/c(2). The significance is estimated to be above 4....

Erasure of epigenetic memory is required to convert somatic cells towards pluripotency. Reactivation of the inactive X chromosome (Xi) has been used to model epigenetic reprogramming in mouse, but human studies are hampered by Xi epigenetic instability and difficulties in tracking partially reprogrammed iPSCs. Here we use cell fusion to examine the earliest events in the reprogramming-induced X...

∂if = f− sif xi − xi+1 where si acts on f by transposing xi and xi+1 and let π̃i = ∂i(xi(1− xi+1)f) Then the Grothendieck-Demazure polynomial κα, which is attributed to A. Lascoux and M. P. Schützenberger, is defined as κα = x α1 1 x α2 2 x α3 3 ... if α1 ≥ α2 ≥ α3 ≥ ..., i.e. α is non-increasing, and κα = π̃iκαsi if αi < αi+1, where si acts on α by transposing the indices. Example 2.1. Let α = (...

Multiple regression is an extension to simple regression in several ways. First, instead of examining a linear relationship bewteen two measurements, Xi and Yi, multiple regression aims to explain relationships between p measurements of an object i, denoted as (Xi,1, ..., Xi,p) and Yi. Based on a sample of n points, with each point having measurements (Yi, Xi,1, ..., Xi,p), multiple regression ...

where the partition function is defined as Z = ∑ x P̃ (x). Let’s define an approximate distribution Q(X) = ∏ iQi(Xi) as a product of independent marginals Qi(Xi) over each variable in the CRF. For notational clarity we use Qi(Xi) to denote the marginal over variable Xi, rather than the more commonly used Q(Xi). The mean field approximation models a distribution Q(X) that minimizes the KL-diverge...

Thrombin generation has been studied in the plasma of severely factor XI deficient patients under conditions in which contact activation did not play a role. In platelet-rich as well as platelet-poor plasma, thrombin generation was dependent upon the presence of factor XI at tissue factor concentrations of between 1 and 20 pg/ml i.e. approximately 0.01 to 0.20% of the concentration normally pre...

The relationship of clinical bleeding tendency and factor XI antigen (XI:Ag) in factor XI deficiency was studied in 78 members of 25 factor XI-deficient kindreds. Factor XI:Ag was measured in a competitive radioimmunoassay, using monospecific, heterologous anti-factor XI antibody. 125I-labeled factor XI, and staphylococcal protein A as the precipitating agent. Deficiency of factor XI clotting a...
