BACKGROUND High body mass index (BMI) is consistently linked to increased risk of colorectal cancer for men, whereas the association is less clear for women. As risk estimates from observational studies may be biased and/or confounded, we conducted a Mendelian randomization study to estimate the causal association between BMI and colorectal cancer. METHODS We used data from 10,226 colorectal ...

In many clinical studies with a survival outcome, administrative censoring occurs when follow-up ends at a prespecified date and many subjects are still alive. An additional complication in some trials is that there is noncompliance with the assigned treatment. For this setting, we study the estimation of the causal effect of treatment on survival probability up to a given time point among thos...

BACKGROUND In utero arsenic exposure may alter fetal developmental programming by altering DNA methylation, which may result in a higher risk of disease in later life. We evaluated the association between in utero arsenic exposure and DNA methylation (DNAm) in cord blood and its influence in later life. METHODS Genome-wide DNA methylation in cord blood from 64 subjects in the Taiwanese matern...

We report the discovery of 19 variable stars and two blue–stragglers in the field of the open cluster NGC 6866. Three of the variable stars we classify as δ Sct, two, as γ Dor, four, as W UMa, two, as ellipsoidal variables, and one, as an eclipsing binary. Seven stars show irregular variability. Two of the pulsators, a δ Sct star NGC 6866-29 and a γ Dor star NGC 6866-21, are multiperiodic. From...

Since their inception, the Perspectives in Logic and Lecture Notes in Logic series have published seminal works by leading logicians. Many of the original books in the series have been unavailable for years, but they are now in print once again. In this volume, the 9th publication in the Lecture Notes in Logic series, Martin Otto gives an introduction to finite model theory that indicates the m...

Technologies for multi-material 3D-printing of anatomical shapes are useful both for fabrication of heterogeneous cell-seeded implants as well as for fabrication of synthetic models for surgical planning and training. For both these applications, it would be desirable to print directly with biological materials to best emulate the target’s properties. Using a novel material platform, we describ...

In this paper, the problem of variable selection in linear regression is considered. This problem involves choosing the most appropriate model from the candidate models. Variable selection criteria based on estimates of the Kullback-Leibler information are most common. Akaike’s AIC and bias corrected AIC belong to this group of criteria. The reduction of the bias in estimating the Kullback-Leib...

To meet with different levels of requirements from proprietors and users and to offer a basis for variable action value to the designers, associated with the standards, this dissertation studied the value standard of load effect and environmental effect. For load effect, on the foundation of analyzing variable load effect model, we used equal exceeding probability principle to calculate the loa...
