A test experiment has shown that the number of ultracold neutrons (UCN) of one polarization state, transmitted through a 100 μm Al foil when placed in a 5 T magnetic field, is greater by 3.8 times. The increased transmission is due to the higher velocity of the UCN passing through the foil.

Interactions between the protein kinase C and Chk1 inhibitor UCN-01 and rapamycin in human leukemia cells have been investigated in relation to apoptosis induction. Treatment of U937 monocytic leukemia cells with rapamycin (10 nmol/L) in conjunction with a minimally toxic concentration of UCN-01 (100 nmol/L) for 36 hours resulted in marked potentiation of mitochondrial injury (i.e., loss of mit...

AIMS To investigate the subacute effects of a sustained intravenous infusion of urocortin-I (Ucn-I) in experimental heart failure (HF). METHODS AND RESULTS In eight sheep with pacing-induced HF, a 4-day infusion of Ucn-I (0.3 microg/kg/h) induced prompt (30 min) and sustained (4-day) increases in cardiac output (CO, Day 4: 1.8+/-0.2 vs. 2.3+/-0.2 L/min, P<0.001) and stroke volume (7.8+/-0.8 v...

Previous studies have demonstrated that cotreatment with mitogen activated-protein kinase kinase (MEK) 1/2 inhibitors (e.g., PD184352) and the checkpoint abrogator 7-hydroxystaurosporine (UCN-01) dramatically induces apoptosis in a variety of human leukemia and multiple myeloma cell types. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the roles of Bcl-2 family members and the relative contribution ...

Corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) is a 41-amino acid neuropeptide that is involved in stress-related physiology and behavior, including control of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Members of the CRF family of neuropeptides, including urocortin 1 (UCN 1), UCN 2, and UCN 3, bind to the G protein-coupled receptors, CRF type 1 (CRF1) and CRF2 receptors. In addition, CRF binding pro...

The amygdala is involved in the associative processes for both appetitive and aversive emotions, and its function is modulated by stress hormones. The neuropeptide corticotrophin releasing factor (CRF) is released during stress and has been linked to many stress-related behavioral, autonomic, and endocrine responses. In the present study, nonanxiety-inducing doses of a potent CRF type 1 and 2 r...

To test the hypothesis that ultraviolet B (UVB) can activate the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, the shaved back skin of C57BL/6 mice was exposed to 400 mJ/cm2 of UVB or was shame irradiated. After 12 and 24 h of exposure, plasma, skin, brain, and adrenals were collected and processed to measure corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), urocortin (Ucn), β-endorphin (β-END), ACTH and cor...

Corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) and urocortin (Ucn I) are endogenous members among a family of CRF-related peptides that activate two different and synaptically localized G-protein-coupled receptors, CRF1 and CRF2. These peptides and their receptors have been implicated in stress responses and stress with cocaine abuse. In this study, we observed significant alterations in excitatory trans...
