Tau is a microtubule-associated protein which regulates the assembly and stability of microtubules in the axons of neurons. Tau is also a major component of neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs), a pathological hallmark in Alzheimer's disease (AD). A characteristic of AD tau is hyperphosphorylation with more than 40 phosphorylation sites. Aggregates of hyperphosphorylated tau are also found in other n...

The purpose of the study was to examine the roles of active pyruvate dehydrogenase (PDH(a)), glycogen phosphorylase (Phos), and their regulators in lactate (Lac(-)) metabolism during incremental exercise after ingestion of 0.3 g/kg of either NaHCO(3) [metabolic alkalosis (ALK)] or CaCO(3) [control (CON)]. Subjects (n = 8) were studied at rest, rest postingestion, and during constant rate cyclin...

Using a readily available form of the mono-phosphine ligand, Gorlos-Phos·HBF4, Pd-catalyzed borylation of aryl chlorides afforded aryl boronates in high yields. A variety of functional groups are well compatible with this palladium catalyzed borylation reaction.

D uring mitosis, kinetochores connect chromosomes to micro-tubules (MTs), helping sister chromatids to align on the metaphase spindle and segregate to opposite poles in anaphase. Yeast kinetochores contain a number of MT-associated proteins (MAPs) that together attach to a single MT. Vertebrate kinetochores carry a similar complement of MAPs, but each kinetochore attaches to 20–30 MTs, perhaps ...

A set of phosphatases was evaluated for their potential to catalyze the regioand stereoselective phosphorylation of alcohols using a high-energy inorganic phosphate donor, such as di-, triand polyphosphate. Parameters such as type and amount of phosphate donor and pH of the reaction were investigated in order to minimize the thermodynamically favored hydrolysis of the phosphate donor and the fo...

In this study, a mixture of [Zn(2)(1,3-bis[bis(2-pyridylmethyl)aminomethyl]benzene)](4+) ([Zn(2)(BBPAB)](4+)) and 11-mercaptoundecylphosphoric acid functionalized gold nanoparticles (Phos-AuNPs) is shown to be a highly sensitive colorimetric probe that can easily detect pyrophosphate (PPi) at less than 200 nM with the naked eye.
