The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in early 1974 began industrial hygiene studies of vinyl chloride exposed workers. Three VC monomer plants, three VC polymerization plants, and seven PVC fabrication plants were surveyed. V polymerization plant workers and workers in one job category in VC monomer plants were exposed to average levels above 1 ppm. The highest aver...

Ethchlorvynol, a sedative-hypnotic drug used clinically since 1955, has recently been the subject of renewed interest primarily because of its chemical relationship to vinyl chloride. In our totigestational studies, sperm-positive female rats were given a daily dose of ethchlorvynol dissolved in olive oil for 21 consecutive days. The dams were allowed to deliver and their offspring were observe...

In an attempt to shed light on the environmental effects on the deactivation channels of the PYP chromophore, radiative and non-radiative deactivation mechanisms of the anionic p-coumaric acid methyl ester (pCE-) in the gas phase and water solution are compared at the CASPT2//CASSCF/cc-pVDZ level and, when necessary, at the CASPT2//CASPT2/cc-pVDZ level. We find that the solvent produces dramati...

Hydrophobie Vinyl Compound, Enhancement Effect, Enzymatic Hydrolysis, Waste Paper Enzymatic hydrolysis o f waste papers in the presence of various vinyl compounds was carried out, and the addition o f the compounds such as methyl methacrylate, styrene, and vinyl acetate increased glucose yield resulting from the acceleration of the rate of the enzymatic hydrolysis. The optimum conditions existe...

Highly stereoselective chelation-controlled Pd(0)-catalyzed beta-arylations and beta-vinylations of a five-membered chiral, pyrrolidine-based vinyl ether were achieved using aryl- and vinyl chlorides as substrates, yielding quaternary 2-aryl/vinyl-2-methyl cyclopentanones in 89-96% ee under neutral reaction conditions.

1,3-Enynes were easily prepared from coupling between vinyl halides and alkynes or domino coupling of vinyl halides in the presence of copper iodide. It is noteworthy that the double-bond geometry of the vinyl halides was retained during the reaction. This ligand-free protocol is potentially useful and practical.

The improvement in exposure conditions in the Swedish vinyl chloride producing industry is reported. The article comments on the technology and control methods by which the vinyl chloride concentration has been lowered to less than 1 ppm vinyl chloride. Two epidemiological retrospective cohort studies are presently under way on workers in PVC-utilizing industries and in the rubber industry.

Poly(vinyl acetate)-b-polystyrene, poly(vinyl acetate)-b-poly(methyl acrylate) and poly(vinyl acetate)-b-poly(methyl methacrylate) block copolymers with low polydispersity (M(w)/M(n) < 1.25) were prepared by successive reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) employing a bromoxanthate iniferter (initiator-transfer age...
