Ticks are ectoparasitic arthropods that can transmit a variety of microorganisms to humans and animals during blood feeding, causing serious infectious disorders, including Lyme disease. Acaricides are pharmacologic agents that kill ticks. The emergence of acaricide-resistant ticks calls for alternative control strategies for ticks and tick-borne diseases. Many animals develop resistance to tic...
Tick-transmitted zoonoses such as human granulocytic anaplasmosis (HGA), Lyme borreliosis and tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) are endemic in several European countries, including Slovenia. Ixodes ricinus, the most prevalent species of hard ticks in Slovenia, is the principal vector for Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, Anaplasma phagocytophilum and TBE virus [1]. Information on clinically manifest...
Rickettsiae of indeterminate pathogenicity are widely associated with ticks. The presence of these endosymbionts can confound a One Health approach to combatting tick-borne diseases. Genomic analyses of symbiotic rickettsiae have revealed that they harbor mutations in gene coding for proteins involved in rickettsial pathogenicity and motility. We have isolated and characterized two rickettsial ...
We harvested 21 fallow deer (Dama dama) and 17 axis deer (Axis axis) in northern Mexico. Two fallow deer were positive for Babesia bigemina and one for Babesia bovis. Amplicons had the expected 170 and 291 base pairs and were identical to B. bigemina (S45366) and B. bovis (M38218), respectively.
Ticks are distributed worldwide and significantly impact human and animal health. Due to severe problems associated with the continuous use of acaricides on animals, integrated tick management is recommended. Increasing public health concern over the tick-borne diseases demands the strategic control of ticks on animals that transmit diseases to human beings. Immunological control of tick vector...
A two-year field study was conducted in four communal grazing areas in South Africa. Sera were collected from young cattle (6-18 months old) in these areas during the winters of 1991 to 1993. The sera were tested for antibodies to Babesia bovis, Babesia bigemina, Anaplasma marginale and Cowdria ruminantium. In two of the four areas, treatment with acaricide was erratic and dependent on the disc...
This manuscript provides a summary of the results presented at a symposium organized to accumulate information on factors that influence the prevalence of acaricide resistance and tick-borne diseases. This symposium was part of the 19th International Conference of the World Association for the Advancement of Veterinary Parasitology (WAAVP), held in New Orleans, LA, USA, during August 10-14, 200...
The study was conducted from October 2014 to June 2015 to estimate tick prevalence and identify major tick genera infesting cattle and the associated risk factors in Arbegona district, southern Ethiopia. A total of 2024 adult ticks were collected from main body parts of animals and eight species of ticks which belong to three genera were identified. Questionnaire survey was employed concerning ...
By extending a mechanistic model for the tick-borne pathogen systemic transmission with consideration of seasonal climate impacts, host movement as well co-feeding route, this paper proposes novel modeling framework describing spatial dynamics diseases. The net reproduction number tick growth and basic disease are derived, which predict global population transmission. Numerical simulations not ...
Ticks are responsible for transmitting viral, bacterial, and protozoal diseases to humans animals also cause significant economic damage the livestock industry. The owner of farmhouse prefers use acaricides, a key component tick control strategies. However, indiscriminate irresponsible acaricides has detrimental effect on increase in contamination environment, acaricide resistance ticks, its re...
