The title compound, Pr(SO(4))(OH), obtained under hydro-thermal conditions, consists of Pr(III) ions coordinated by nine O atoms from six sulfate groups and three hydroxide anions. The bridging mode of the O atoms results in the formation of a three-dimensional framework, stabilized by two O-H⋯O hydrogen-bonding inter-actions.
A ditopic melamine bearing perylene bisimides with swallow-tail alkyl chains can be dissolved in organic solvents by mixing with complementary hydrogen-bonding barbiturate or cyanurate, forming solution processable supramolecular assemblies. Upon spin-coating the assemblies, highly organized lamellar architectures are formed with thermal annealing, which act as electron transporting layers in o...
A large bis-urea macrocycle was synthesized and assembled into columnar nanotubes containing a sizable cavity. This purely organic nanotube is held together primarily by hydrogen bonding and yet shows remarkable thermal stability up to 180 degrees C in the presence and absence of acetic acid guest. This enables the nanotube to be used as reusable organic zeolite.
Rationally designed polypeptides with similar molecular structures but varying patterns of hydrogen bonding between the side groups have been synthesized and demonstrated to possess distinct solubility and thermal behaviors. Further balancing the ratio of both isopropylamine and ethylenediamine side groups endows the random copolymer with reversible thermo-sensitivity.
Polymer materials have been used for electronic, optical and bio micro/nano devices. Polymer device fabrication technologies based on replication methods including hot embossing (Becker & Heim, 2000; Park et al., 2003; Shinohara et al., 2007b), injection molding (Becker et al., 1986; Svedberg et al., 2003), ultraviolet (UV) imprinting (Haisma et al., 1996; Kawaguchi et al., 2007; Shinohara et a...
There has been a growing interest in thermal management materials due to the prevailing energy challenges and unfulfilled needs for thermal insulation applications. We demonstrate the exceptional thermal management capabilities of a large-scale, hierarchal alignment of cellulose nanofibrils directly fabricated from wood, hereafter referred to as nanowood. Nanowood exhibits anisotropic thermal p...
The crystal structure of the wild-type nucleoside diphosphate kinase from Mycobacterium tuberculosis at 2.6 Å resolution revealed that the intersubunit salt bridge Arg80-Asp93 contributes to the thermal stability of the hexamer (Tm = 76°C). On mutating Asp93 to Asn to break the salt bridge, the thermal stability dramatically decreased by 27.6°C. Here, on mutating Arg80 to Asn, the thermal stabi...
A combination of ab initio, atomistic and finite element methods (FEM) were used to investigate the structures, energetics and lattice thermal conductance of grain boundaries for the ultra high temperature ceramic ZrB2. Atomic models of idealized boundaries were relaxed using density functional theory. Information about bonding across the interfaces was determined from the electron localization...
Compositionally graded bulk materials of organic polymer blends were prepared by using nonequilibrium self-organization processes with a uniaxial thermal gradient (Bridgman method). The Bridgman method was firstly applied to prepare two kinds of polymeric compositionally graded materials: a polymer/low molecular weight additive system (poly(e-caprolactone) (PCL)/ 4,49-thiodiphenol (TDP)) and a ...
