We investigated the interaction between amphotericin B and azithromycin in vitro against 26 clinical isolates of Fusarium. Synergy was demonstrated in all isolates. Amphotericin B MICs were reduced from a mean of 1 mg/L when tested alone to a mean of 0.37 mg/L when tested in combination with azithromycin. Azithromycin demonstrated no activity against Fusarium when tested alone (MIC > 128 mg/L)....

Azithromycin is an antibiotic that is commonly prescribed for upper and lower respiratory tract infections in children. While it has proven benefits, some concerns regarding azithromycin use have arisen in recent years. This practice point considers azithromycin therapy for acute respiratory infections in otherwise healthy children. Pharmacokinetics, spectrum of activity, the problem of resista...

Rhinovirus infection is a major cause of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) exacerbations and may contribute to the development into severe stages of COPD. The macrolide antibiotic azithromycin may exert anti-viral actions and has been reported to reduce exacerbations in COPD. However, little is known about its anti-viral actions on bronchial epithelial cells at clinically relevant co...

Macrolide antibiotics are known to have a different proarrhythmic potential in the presence of comparable QT prolongation in the surface ECG. Because the extent of QT prolongation has been used as a surrogate marker for cardiotoxicity, we aimed to study the different electrophysiological effects of the macrolide antibiotics erythromycin, clarithromycin, and azithromycin in a previously develope...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Azithromycin, an approved single-dose therapy for cervical chlamydia infections, costs four times as much as doxycycline, the standard multidose theapy. GOAL OF THIS STUDY This study examined whether azithromycin is cost effective for treating cervical chlamydia infections. STUDY DESIGN Two diagnostic strategies were compared: 1) laboratory confirmation of chlamydi...

This study was conducted to identify whether or not a pharmacokinetic interaction existed when azithromycin and ceftriaxone were administered concurrently. This randomized, open-label, three-way crossover study in 12 healthy volunteers characterized the plasma pharmacokinetic parameter profiles of both drugs, as well as the white blood cell uptake and exposure to azithromycin, when the drugs we...

The prognosis of patients with chronic respiratory tract infections, especially diffuse panbronchiolitis, is remarkably improved by long-term administration of low-dose macrolides. However, in some cases, patients are refractory to macrolide treatment and show a low or no response; therefore, new treatment strategies are required. Here we present a patient refractory to either single low-dose c...

BACKGROUND Antibiotic use on animals demonstrates improved growth regardless of whether or not there is clinical evidence of infectious disease. Antibiotics used for trachoma control may play an unintended benefit of improving child growth. METHODOLOGY In this sub-study of a larger randomized controlled trial, we assess anthropometry of pre-school children in a community-randomized trial of m...

OBJECTIVES To investigate the in vitro effects of azithromycin on macrophage phenotype. Utilizing a mouse macrophage cell line (J774), we examined the effect of azithromycin on the properties that define classical macrophage activation (M1) and alternative macrophage activation (M2). METHODS J774 cells were cultured in the presence of azithromycin and stimulated with classical activation [int...

OBJECTIVES To describe antibiotic use for treatment of Mycoplasma genitalium (MG) at an urban sexual health centre in Australia. To describe MG positivity rates in those returning for 1 month test of cure (TOC) following first-line antibiotic treatment for MG. METHODS Retrospective cross-sectional case-note review for all patients diagnosed with MG at Sydney Sexual Health Centre from 2009 to ...
