Computing a polygon defining a set of planar points is a classical problem of modern computational geometry. In laboratory experiments we demonstrate that a concave hull, a connected α-shape without holes, of a finite planar set is approximated by slime mould Physarum polycephalum. We represent planar points with sources of long-distance attractants and short-distance repellents and inoculate a...
The cellular slime mold Dictyostelium discoideum is normally susceptible to the action of the polyene antibiotic nystatin. We describe conditions under which transient nystatin resistance can be induced in the absence of detectable changes in sterol composition. These results suggest that nystatin plays a positive role in promoting resistance to itself.
Cadherins and catenins evidently partnered at the dawn of the animal kingdom to enable the first polarized epithelium, and perhaps animal evolution itself. New evidence from a primitive slime mold, however, suggests that α- and β-catenins may have engaged this function independently, long before cadherins arrived on the scene.
Rhythmicity of contraction of plasmodial strands of Physarum polycephalum was studied, by measuring the isometric tension exerted by isolated segments of the strands. When 2 strands were connected by way of a plasmodial mass, the contraction-relaxation cycle of the 2 strands synchronized. Such cycle activity of the strand was found to be well coordinated with shuttle streaming in the plasmodial...
How are stimuli parsed to enable behavior? To transition from sending signals around to coordinating a behavior, Physarum needs to somehow store and process information about stimuli. Stimuli are commonly encountered at the edge of an individual’s network, where flows become vanishingly small. Any molecular signal triggered by a stimulus at the edge will therefore not be homogenized throughout ...
How do the topology and geometry of a tubular network affect the spread of particles within fluid flows? We investigate patterns of effective dispersion in the hierarchical, biological transport network formed by Physarum polycephalum. We demonstrate that a change in topology-pruning in the foraging state-causes a large increase in effective dispersion throughout the network. By comparison, cha...

Physarum polycephalum is a macroscopic single celled plasmodial slime mould. We employ plasmodial phototactic responses to construct laboratory prototypes of NOT and NAND logical gates with electrical inputs/outputs and optical coupling; the slime mould plays dual roles of computing device and electrical conductor. Slime mould logical gates are fault tolerant and resettable. The results present...
This paper reports on the recent outcomes from our research into Unconventional Computing for sound and music using slime mould of Physarum polycephalum. This slime mould is a huge single cell with thousands of nuclei, which behaves like a giant amoeba. During its foraging behaviour it produces electrical activity corresponding to different physiological states. We developed a method to render ...
