Sweat pores on fingerprints have proven to be discriminative features and have recently been successfully employed in automatic fingerprint recognition systems (AFRS), where the extraction of fingerprint pores is a critical step. Most of the existing pore extraction methods detect pores by using a static isotropic pore model; however, their detection accuracy is not satisfactory due to the limi...
The Thomsen-Friedenreich (T) antigen is the core disaccharide of cancer-associated carbohydrates, whose expression allegedly correlates with the prognosis of some carcinomas. We studied the expression of the T antigen and its precursor (Tn) with monoclonal antibodies in formalin-fixed specimens of normal skin and various benign cutaneous tumours and inflammatory lesions (n: 105). In normal skin...
Blister formation and eccrine sweat gland necrosis is a cutaneous manifestation associated with states of impaired consciousness, most frequently reported after overdoses of central nervous system depressants, particularly phenobarbital. The case of a 45-year-old woman who developed "coma blisters" at six distinct anatomic sites after confirmed (laboratory) phenobarbital poisoning, associated w...
In humans, urea is excreted in sweat, largely through the eccrine sweat gland. The urea concentration in human sweat is elevated when compared to blood urea nitrogen. The sweat urea nitrogen (UN) of patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESRD) is increased when compared with healthy humans. The ability to produce sweat is maintained in the overwhelming majority of ESRD patients. A comprehensiv...
BACKGROUND Continuous non-invasive sampling and sensing of multiple classes of analytes could revolutionize medical diagnostics and wearable technologies, but also remains highly elusive because of the many confounding factors for candidate biofluids such as interstitial fluid, tears, saliva, and sweat. Eccrine sweat biosensing has seen a recent surge in demonstrations of wearable sampling and ...
Previous studies have indicated that denervation of adult rodent sweat glands results in the loss of secretory responsiveness to muscarinic agonists. To elucidate the molecular basis of this loss, we have characterized the muscarinic cholinergic receptor present in adult rat sweat glands and examined the effects of cholinergic denervation on its properties and expression. When homogenates of gl...
Sialadenoma papilliferum is a rare tumor, primarily of minor salivary gland origin, first described by Abrams and Finck (Cancer 24:1057-63, 1969). It is both an exophytic and endophytic papillary lesion histologically resembling syringocystadenoma papilliferum of sweat gland. The tumor is considered benign although rare recurrent cases have been reported. Three cases of malignant transformation...
Two cases of phenotypically similar ectodermal dysplasia characterised by reduction of hair, diminished sweat pores, missing teeth and somewhat cracked and abnormal skin were studied to understand the genetic basis of this disorder with the help of pedigrees. The mode of inheritance in one case was suggested to be x-linked where as in the other case it was autosomal recessive. (JPMA 35 225, 1985).
