background: dose calculation algorithms play a very important role in predicting the explicit dose distribution. we evaluated the percent depth dose (pdd), lateral depth dose profile, and surface dose volume histogram in inhomogeneous media using calculation algorithms and inhomogeneity correction methods. materials and methods: the homogeneous and inhomogeneous virtual slab phantoms used in th...

Despite increasing scientific scrutiny in recent years, the direct impact of the ozone hole on surface temperatures over Antarctica remains uncertain. Here, we explore this question by using the Community Earth System Model Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model (CESM-WACCM), contrasting two ensembles of runs with and without stratospheric ozone depletion. We find that, during austral spring,...

Due to computational expense, the radiation schemes in many weather and climate models are called infrequently in time and/or on a reduced spatial grid. The former can lead to a lag in the diurnal cycle of surface temperature, while the latter can lead to large surface temperature errors at coastal land points due to surface fluxes computed over the ocean being used where the skin temperature a...

A recent paper compared approximate radiative transfer results for top-of-atmosphere (TOA) radiance, using various algorithms published in the literature. We show that one of the algorithms was used incorrectly, resulting in its poor performance as stated in that paper. Correct usage produces results with errors typically less than 3%, which compares favorably to the other tested algorithms.

Using the computationally efficient discrete-ordinate method, we present an analytical solution for radiative transfer in the coupled atmosphere-ocean system with a rough air-water interface. The theoretical formulations of the radiative transfer equation and solution are described. The effects of surface roughness on the radiation field in the atmosphere and ocean are studied and compared with...
