HIV-mediated immune dysfunction may influence CD4(+) T cell recovery during suppressive antiretroviral therapy (ART). We analyzed cellular biomarkers of immunological inflammation, maturation, and senescence in HIV-infected subjects on early suppressive ART. We performed longitudinal analyses of peripheral immunological biomarkers of subjects on suppressive ART (n = 24) from early treatment (me...

Elite suppressors are untreated individuals with human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection who maintain viral loads <50 copies/mL. Using a single-copy assay, we show that there is no statistically significant difference between the proportions of elite suppressors and patients receiving suppressive highly active antiretroviral therapy who have viral loads of <1 copy/mL.

Activating human immune system to battle cancer has been a focus of cancer immunotherapy research from quite some time. After decades of disappointment, the tide has finally changed with some recent successes in clinical trials. The first such approach with clinical success is cytotoxic T lymphocyte antigen-4 (CTLA4) antibody therapy which aims to relieve the immune suppressive effects of CTLA-...

The aim of this one-year prospective study was to determine whether longterm thyroxine treatment is a risk factor for elevated bone turnover, loss of bone mass and subsequent development of osteoporosis. Premenopausal women (N = 19), and men (N = 9) suffering from differentiated thyroid gland carcinoma in the mean age of 39.0 +/- 8.0 years and 41.8 +/- 10.0 years were investigated. All of them ...

The source and dynamics of persistent HIV-1 during long-term combinational antiretroviral therapy (cART) are critical to understanding the barriers to curing HIV-1 infection. To address this issue, we isolated and genetically characterized HIV-1 DNA from naïve and memory T cells from peripheral blood and gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT) from eight patients after 4-12 y of suppressive cART....

In the September 2009 issue of CHEST , Zilberberg and colleagues 1 reported on the association between patients receiving prolonged acute mechanical ventilation (PAMV) and Clostridium diffi cile -associated disease (CDAD). The reported infection rate (5.3%) in the current study was signifi cantly higher than previously reported by the same authors in the general hospital population (0.112%). 2 ...
