This study investigated the asymmetric effects of oil shocks–oil price, demand and supply shocks–on military expenditure in Nigeria. Our confirmed presence short-run long-run asymmetries all three models used. Generally, positive price shocks positively influence vice versa for negative shocks. However, a shock is detrimental to expenditure.

A 47 year old man was brought by ambulance to the accident and emergency department after sustaining an electric shock at home. He was repairing a washing machine which had not been disconnected from the mains supply. As he reached around the drum with both arms he sustained an electric shock, rendering him unable to release his grip on the drum for at least 10 seconds. He did not lose consciou...

BIOCHEMICAL DERANGEMENTS resulting from adrenal cortical hyperfunction or from critical reduction of the endogenous corticosteroid hormone supply are sometimes overshadowed by major disturbances of cardiovascular function. Arterial hypertension and congestive heart failure may be the predominanit presenting clinical features in patients with adrenal cortical hyperfunction. During acute illness ...

Massive stars undergo a violent death when the supply of nuclear fuel in their cores is exhausted, resulting in a catastrophic "core-collapse" supernova. Such events are usually only detected at least a few days after the star has exploded. Observations of the supernova SNLS-04D2dc with the Galaxy Evolution Explorer space telescope reveal a radiative precursor from the supernova shock before th...

Improved Finite-Volume Method for Radiative Hydrodynamics Alan Wray* Corresponding author: [email protected] * NASA Ames Research Center, USA Abstract: Fully coupled simulations of hydrodynamics and radiative transfer are essential to a number of fields ranging from astrophysics to engineering applications. Of particular interest in this work are hypersonic atmospheric entries and associate...

This paper documents empirically that net firm entry robustly rises after a US government spending expansion. We use this new finding to test the empirical validity of various model features that have been put forward to generate a crowding-in of consumption after an expenditure shock. In particular, we show that models with endogenous entry can simultaneously generate an increase in consumptio...

Given the difficulty in the prevention of terrorism, we have to figure out how to insulate our economy from a shock following a terrorist attack. For this purpose, it is indispensable to understand how terrorism can negatively influence the economy. In this paper, the focus is on the case of a small open economy where imports exceed exports. I pay a particular attention to the response of the c...

Hemorrhagic shock causes a reduction in oxygen supply to tissues leading to increased reactive oxygen species resulting in lung injury. Often mechanical ventilation is required as supportive treatment; however, ventilation can also induce lung injury and apoptosis. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of three modes of controlled mechanical ventilation: volume control, pressure ...

Communication and no-communication versions of a two-stage principal-agent model are compared. The models contain a risk-averse agent and two sources of private information, a shock to preferences followed by a productive action. Both models are formulated as linear programs, which are then used to compute solutions to examples. In simple cases, a sufficient condition for communication to be va...

Kienböck's disease is a rare, painful disorder of the wrist that can seriously restrict the quality of life of patients who have the disease. Although a century has passed since the pathology was identified, its etiology is still uncertain, with mechanical, traumatic, vascular, and systemic factors all being advocated. Likewise, there is no consensus regarding treatment, and no approach-either ...
