From the Editor—Emergency physicians must often make decisions about patient management without clear-cut data of sufficient quality to support clinical guidelines or evidence-based reviews. Topics in the Best Available Evidence section must be relevant to emergency physicians, are formally peer-reviewed, and must have a sufficient literature base to draw a reasonable conclusion, but not such a...
Staphylococcus aureus is the most common etiologic agent of skin abscesses. The regional rate of methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) abscesses may reflect the prevalence of local community-acquired MRSA (CAMRSA). A retrospective study was conducted to compare the antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of S. aureus isolates recovered from abscesses from 2003 to 2006 from patients at hospitals ...
Current research was conducted to estimate heritability and genetic correlations for carcass composition and fat deposition in Japanese quail at 42 and 91 d of age. Studied traits were BW at 42 and 91 d of age (BW42, BW91), carcass weight and percentage, breast meat weight and percentage, thigh weight and percentage, abdominal fat weight and abdominal fat percentage (AFP), skin weight and skin ...
Staphylococcus aureus strains that produce Panton-Valentine leukocidin are known to cause community infections. We describe an outbreak of skin abscesses caused by Panton-Valentine leukocidin-producing methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (clonal complex 121) in a professional rugby team in France during July 2010-February 2011. Eight team members were carriers; 7 had skin abscesses.
Dermal sinuses are well-characterized lesions (1-3). A patient with a dermal sinus frequently has a hairy nevus or dimple overlying the tract. Yet, despite having this cutaneous marker, these patients often seek medical attention only after they suffer an infectious complication of the tract. Although infection most commonly will occur in the form of a cutaneous abscess, another more serious an...
We describe the CT appearance of supraglottitis and its complications in three adults. The most common CT findings were thickening of the epiglottis, aryepiglottic folds, false and true vocal cords, obliteration of the preepiglottic fa, thickening of the platysma muscle, and reticulation of the subcutaneous fat. Multiple loculated fluid-density collections consistent with abscesses were seen in...
