The authors describe a severe and rare case of restrictive strabismus, acquired during the first semester of life, in a previously normal baby. They discuss the possibility of inflammatory or infectious disease as the primary cause. Surgical management was challenging, after three procedures and required the cooperation of strabismus and orbit specialists and also a wide incision for orbital su...
Purpose Strabismus correction surgery is well documented in both the literature and practice with varying levels of success and permanence. Our goal was to characterize longitudinal changes in eye alignment and eye movements following strabismus correction surgery in a monkey model for developmental strabismus. Methods We studied two juvenile rhesus monkeys with exotropia previously induced v...
Four methods of administering suxamethonium were composed in patients undergoing surgery for strabismus who were matched for sex, age, weight and height. Pre-treatment with tubocurarine afforded the best control of suxamethonium-induced sequelae. Serum potassium remained within normal limits suggesting that individuals with strabismus behave differently from those free of this defect.
PURPOSE To investigate the symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) as reported by parents in children with intermittent exotropia [X(T)] and to determine whether strabismus surgery for X(T) affects ADHD symptoms. MATERIALS AND METHODS Fifty-one consecutive children undergoing muscle surgery for X(T) were prospectively recruited. One parent of each child completed the ADHD ...
PURPOSE To evaluate and compare the efficacy and tolerance of fibrin glue and sutures for closing conjunctival wounds in strabismus surgery. METHODS In a prospective trial, we performed strabismus surgery using limbal incisions. Conjunctival wounds were closed with fibrin glue in 20 eyes of 20 patients (fibrin group) and 8-0 polyglactin suture in 20 eyes of 20 patients (suture group). Postope...

Eye surgeons face this complication less frequently than general or thoracic surgeons, but few ofthose who have practised for many years have not met cases of actual or threatened cardiac arrest.
