The present work is an attempt in the direction of predicting sequences of building blocks of communication, the parts of speech, in any text. Five novels and five short stories of English language have been tagged under four different treatments and then statistical distributions of the parts of speech have been obtained. The goodness of fit of the distributions has been testified by χ2 -test ...

Various statistical models have been proposed for detecting differential gene expression in data from microarray experiments. Given such detection, we are usually interested in describing the differential expression patterns. Due to the large number of genes that are typically analysed in microarray experiments, possibly more than ten thousand, the tasks of interpretation and communication of a...

We describe the design of an MT system that employs transfer rules induced from parsed bitexts and present evaluation results. The system learns lexico-structural transfer rules using syntactic pattern matching, statistical co-occurrence and errordriven filtering. In an experiment with domainspecific Korean to English translation, the approach yielded substantial improvements over three baselin...

In this paper we argue that a couple of taken-for-granted methods employed in studying behavioral facts of human risk preference are mistakable. We call for within-subjects experiment design and propose a simple statistical method that might be used to test the validity of using sample mean in interpreting as well as generalizing risk preferences.

Theories of visual attention commonly posit that early parallel processes extract conspicuous features such as color contrast and motion from the visual field. These features are then combined into a saliency map, and attention is directed to the most salient regions first. Top-down attentional control is achieved by modulating the contribution of different feature types to the saliency map. A ...
