Abdominal closure in children less than 10 kg following liver or kidney transplantation can be challenging. Excessive pressure attained from a tight closure can result in abdominal compartment syndrome, graft compromise and loss. Concerns over using prosthetic patches are that of infection and dehiscence. We report a series of definitive abdominal wall closure using a biodegradable membrane fro...
BACKGROUND Inability to close the abdominal wall after laparotomy for trauma may occur as a result of visceral edema, retroperitoneal hematoma, use of packing, and traumatic loss of tissue. Often life-saving, decompressive laparotomy and temporary abdominal closure require later restoration of anatomic continuity of the abdominal wall. METHODS The trauma registry, open abdomen database, and p...
Idiopathic scrotal calcinosis is an uncommon benign disorder of the scrotal skin which is characterized by multiple calcified intradermal nodules. We report a 33-year old with asymptomatic multiple calcified scrotal skin nodules. He had wide excision of the lesions and direct closure of the scrotum. We review the pathogenesis and surgical treatment options for this rare disease of the scrotum.
BACKGROUND Pain is considered as an importantissue after cesarean section. Multimodal approach to post cesarean pain management may not only enhance analgesia but also reduce side effects after the surgery. OBJECTIVES This study was aimed to evaluate the clinical efficacy of subcutaneous injection of low dose ketamine at the incision site to reduce cesarean section pain. PATIENTS AND METHOD...
BACKGROUND Full-thickness skin graft (FTSG) is a very versatile tool regularly used in small sizes. With the established knowledge of the graft take through the margins as well as wound bed, we extended the use of the FTSG for reconstruction of large-sized defects with satisfactory results. METHODS We presented our experience in wound reconstruction using FTSG in 28 patients. We select...
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Molecules native to tissue that fluoresce upon light excitation can serve as reporters of cellular activity and protein structure. In skin, the fluorescence ascribed to tryptophan is a marker of cellular proliferation, whereas the fluorescence ascribed to cross-links of collagen is a structural marker. In this work, we introduce and demonstrate a simple but robust optic...
BACKGROUND Repair of skin wounds is essential for animals to survive in a harsh environment, yet the signaling pathways initiating wound repair in vivo remain little understood. In Caenorhabditis elegans, a p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) cascade promotes innate immune responses to wounding but is not required for other aspects of wound healing. We therefore set out to identify addi...
Plantar skin is known for specializations such as lack of hair, accelerated epidermal turnover, poor barrier function, and expression cytokeratin 9, but both clinically scientifically it often regarded just thicker versions “normal” skin. Using the porcine model (which we have found shares many structural molecular similarities with human plantar skin, more so than rodent models), recently that...
