We compared nasopharyngeal swabs against nasal wash cultures for detecting colonizing pneumococci and examined the effect of frozen storage in skim milk-tryptone-glucose-glycerin on culture. Among the 55 children with positive nasal wash cultures, swab cultures were positive for 47 (85%). Of the 96 swabs positive on direct plating, 94 (98%) were positive when recultured after freezing.
Epidemiological studies that have investigated whether dairy (mainly milk) diets are associated with prostate cancer risk have led to controversial conclusions. In addition, no existing study clearly evaluated the effects of dairy/milk diets on prostate tumor progression, which is clinically highly relevant in view of the millions of men presenting with prostate pathologies worldwide, including...
We have compared the proteomic profiles of L. lactis subsp. cremoris NCDO763 growing in the synthetic medium M17Lac, skim milk microfiltrate (SMM), and skim milk. SMM was used as a simple model medium to reproduce the initial phase of growth of L. lactis in milk. To widen the analysis of the cytoplasmic proteome, we used two different gel systems (pH ranges of 4 to 7 and 4.5 to 5.5), and the pr...
Human milk (HM) contains a plethora of metabolic hormones, including leptin, which is thought to participate in the regulation of the appetite of the developing infant. Leptin in HM is derived from a combination of de novo mammary synthesis and transfer from the maternal serum. Moreover, leptin is partially lipophilic and is also present in HM cells. However, leptin has predominately been measu...
Similar populations of Pseudomonas fragi were grown at 25 C for 20 hr or at 7 C for 7 days in milk containing 0, 10, and 20% fat; they were then heated at 48, 50, and 52 C in milk containing 0, 10, and 20% fat. After inoculation, the heating medium contained 2.1 x 10(6) to 6.9 x 10(6) organisms per milliliter. The P. fragi cells grown in skim milk had greater thermal resistance (D(52) = 3.0 to ...
Among various food sources, milk proteins remain the major vector for functional peptides endowed with several biological activities. Particularly, proteolytic activity of lactic acid bacteria during fermentation has been one most followed strategies to produce bioactive peptides. In present study, exploration starter cultures, at different times, was firstly investigated by reversed phase-high...
The link (or lack of link) between food commodity prices and consumer prices is an important issue not only for academics but also for policymakers. This paper asks how and to what extent changes in food commodity prices spill over to consumer prices, using a new data set for the euro area as well as a new empirical approach. The authors find that there is a statistically significant link betwe...
In STGG (skim milk, tryptone, glucose, glycerol) medium at -80 degrees C, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, and Moraxella catarrhalis isolates survived for at least 3 years, and the same species have survived in nasopharyngeal swabs for at least 1.5 years. At -20 degrees C, S. pneumoniae and M. catarrhalis survived for 1.5 years, but H. influenzae survived for only 2 months.
Dialyzed brain heart infusion-skim milk agar medium facilitated the recovery of colonial dissociants of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Differences in colonial morphology as well as in proteolytic activity were readily visualized, thus permitting facile isolation of segregating colony types for further biochemical, serological, and susceptibility studies.
