Dashmulakwatha, a preparation of Dashmula official in the Ayurvedic Formulary, was estimated for its phytosterol content by HPTLC method. The preparation was found to contain 7.165% W/W of phytosterols with respect to β-sitosterol as standard.

Free and conjugated sterols are among the main compounds responsible for pitch deposition in the manufacture of wood chemical pulps, making difficult the implementation of totally chlorine free bleaching (TCF) and closure of bleach plant circuits. In this work, the suitability of oxidative enzymes in efficiently removing sterols from eucalypt pulps is revealed. The enzymatic treatment was appli...

Pereskia bleo (Kunth) DC. (Cactaceae) is a plant commonly used in popular medicine in Malaysia. In this work, we evaluate the antinociceptive effect of P. bleo leaf extracts and isolated compounds in central antinociceptive model. Ethanol extract (E), hexane (H), ethyl acetate (EA), or butanol (B) fractions (30, 50, or 100 mg/kg, p.o.), sitosterol (from hexane) and vitexin (from ethyl acetate),...

Platostoma rotundifolium (Briq.) A. J. Paton aerial parts are widely used in Burundi traditional medicine to treat infectious diseases. In order to investigate their probable antibacterial activities, crude extracts from P. rotundifolium were assessed for their bactericidal and anti-virulence properties against an opportunistic bacterial model, Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1. Whereas none of the t...

Upon inoculation with pathogenic microbes, plants induce an array of metabolic changes that potentially contribute to induced resistance or even enhance susceptibility. When analysing leaf lipid composition during the Arabidopsis thaliana-Pseudomonas syringae interaction, we found that accumulation of the phytosterol stigmasterol is a significant plant metabolic process that occurs upon bacteri...

A stem ethanol extract of Bauhinia strychnifolia and its compounds were investigated for their anti-HIV-1 integrase (IN) and anti-allergic activities. From bioassay-guided isolation, five compounds including quercetin (1), 3,5,7,3',5'pentahydroxyflavanonol-3-O--L-rhamnopyranoside (2), 3,5,7-trihydroxychromone-3--L-rhamnopyranoside (3) and a mixture of -sitosterol (4) and stigmasterol (5) wer...

The effects of a strict uncooked vegan diet on serum lipid and sterol concentrations were studied in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. The subjects were randomized into a vegan diet group (n 16), who consumed a vegan diet for 2-3 months, or into a control group (n 13), who continued their usual omnivorous diets. Serum total and LDL-cholesterol and -phospholipid concentrations were significant...

Sitosterol, campesterol, stigmasterol, and cholesterol were isolated from green wheat (Triticium aestivum var. Monon) seedlings. Sitosterol was the predominant sterol extracted from the shoot, root, and crown tissue. Cholesterol accounted for less that 1% of sterol in shoot tissue with only trace amounts in the root. A temperature change from 10 to 1 C resulted in a general decrease in sitoster...

We have determined the effect of the side chain on the uptake of sterols from micellar solutions by isolated rat jejunal villus cells, brush border membranes, and erythrocytes. From an equimolar mixture of 7-dehydrosterols, the uptake decreased with an increasing number of carbon atoms at C24 of the sterol side chain in a manner identical to that observed for the parent-delta 5-sterols. The bru...
