In 1992, the FDA decided that silicone gel-filled breast implants would be available only through controlled clinical studies, despite the fact that they had been used for mammoplasty in millions of women around the world for more than 30 years. The safety of silicone breast implants had been called into question after several reports of a possible association between the implants and the subse...

This paper presents our studies on surface modification of silicone elastomer by collagen grafting/coating and electron beam irradiation. Two types of collagen hydrolysates with different molecular weights were obtained and characterized, which were used in experiments. Both silicone elastomer crosslinking and collagen grafting on the surface of silicone elastomer were achieved by electron beam...

A combined technique of extracapsular cataract extraction and silicone oil injection is described. The anterior capsule is preserved to prevent movement of the silicone oil from the vitreous cavity to the anterior chamber. An anterior chamber tap ensures that the vitreous cavity is completely filled with silicone oil, while a peripheral iridectomy prevents postoperative pupillary block glaucoma.

Unregulated, pseudomedical procedures risk serious sequelae even when otherwise safe compounds are used. Silicone is commonly used legally in cosmetic procedures owing to its durability, resistance to heat and aging, and low immunogenicity. However, inappropriate or illegal silicone injection can pose severe local and systemic complications including serious pulmonary compromise. We describe th...

OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to assess the cost effectiveness of silicone and alginate impressions for complete dentures. METHODS Cost effectiveness analyses were undertaken alongside a UK single centre, double blind, controlled, crossover clinical trial. Taking the perspective of the healthcare sector, effectiveness is measured using the EuroQol (EQ-5D-3L) which provides a single inde...

Brest implants made of materials such as ivory, rubber, or ox cartilage have been used since the 19th century. After the 1940s, direct subcutaneous silicone injections were introduced, which caused serious complications (infections and migration to distant tissues). In the 1960s, a solid silicone envelope filled with silicone gel or saline was used. Escape of silicone from the envelope of these...

In the early 1960s, Cronin and Gerow began to use a silicone bag filled with silicone gel for breast augmentation. Since then, researchers have been looking for different filler materials. An ideal prosthesis does not induce any tissue reaction, is stable, gives the breast a natural appearance, and is radiolucent during mammography. In case of rupture of the envelope, the filler material should...

Background: Encrustation of urinary catheters is a frequent problem in patients with long-term indwelling catheters colonised with urease-positive bacteria such as Proteus mirabilis. Catheter blockage may follow catheter encrustation, potentially leading to systemic infection. Prevention of encrustation is difficult and avoidance of recurrence often unsuccessful. One possible preventative strat...

NOVEMBER 2004 37 W hen applying silicone coatings, it is essential to view the final product, not as a series of separate product processing steps and components, but as an integrated system. The functional performance of the silicone coating is affected not only by the physical properties of the silicone, but also by the application process and the performance characteristics required by the f...

BACKGROUND Characteristic complications have been reported for transconjunctival sutureless vitrectomy, such as postoperative sclerotomy leakage and postoperative hypotony. Particular attention to sclerotomy closure is required in cases of silicone oil tamponade, because postoperative supplementation of silicone oil implies reoperation, whereas postoperative supplement of gas is comparatively e...
