Quality of life related to health is an important metric for evaluating therapeutic interventions or programs. Quality of life is a multidimensional and dynamic concept widely used in surveys where interacting determinants of biological, psychological, socio economic, cultural and smart policies are involved. This measurement allows assessment of subjective and interpersonal physical health, me...

The Texas Department of Transportation has experienced problems with inconsistent performance of the coarse aggregate fraction of hotmix asphalt pavements. This project was initiated to address problems associated with variations in hotmix coarse aggregate quality. More specifically, the researchers wanted to identify simple tests that can be performed at the aggregate quarries to assess the du...

A family A of sets is said to be t-intersecting if any two sets in A contain at least t common elements. A t-intersecting family is said to be trivial if there are at least t elements common to all its sets. Let X be an r-set {x1, ..., xr}. For k ≥ 2, we de ne SX,k and S∗ X,k to be the families of k-signed r-sets given by SX,k := {{(x1, a1), ..., (xr, ar)} : a1, ..., ar are elements of {1, ...,...

When we hear a story that describes motion, do we naturally imagine the motion described? To what extent do the mental images generated through language share processing resources with perception? In our studies, people read a story describing upward or downward motion and were later asked to interpret an unrelated ambiguous figure. The figure could have been seen as a bird flying upward or dow...

This paper investigates the detection of information hidden by the Least Significant Bit (LSB) matching scheme. In a theoretical context of known image media parameters, two important results are presented. First, the use of hypothesis testing theory allows us to design the Most Powerful (MP) test. Second, a study of the MP test gives us the opportunity to analytically calculate its statistical...

Locating steganographic payload using Weighted Stego-image (WS) residuals has been proven successful provided a large number of stego images are available. In this paper, we revisit this topic with two goals. First, we argue that it is a promising approach to locate payload by showing that in the ideal scenario where the cover images are available, the expected number of stego images needed to ...

We show that participants in conversation develop beliefs about shared information that others do not. So-called directors talked with two partners in succession (A and B) to arrange unusual figures. Directors went from long, indefinite descriptions of the figures to short, definite references as common ground was built up with A. When B had been a silent side participant in the fast conversati...

In 1974, Sterbenz [20] presented a theorem about the exact subtraction of two floating point numbers x and y when they are very close one from another, that is y 2 ≤ x ≤ 2y. The theorem stating that x−y is exact under the preceding condition was presented for any radix provided the hardware was accurate enough. More recently, other authors [8,10] presented similar results with an emphasis on di...

In this paper we present a new lattice construction for a lattice based partial key exposure attack for the RSA cryptography. We consider the situation that the RSA secret key d is small and a sufficient amount of the LSBs (least significant bits) of d are known by the attacker. We show that our lattice construction is theoretically more efficient than known attacks proposed in [2, 7].

Status is greatly valued in the real world, yet it has not received much attention from economic theorists. We examine how the owner of a firm can best combine money and status together to get his employees to work hard for the least total cost. We find that he should motivate workers of low skill mostly by status and high skill mostly by money. Moreover, he should do so by using a small number...
