Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, including gestational hypertension and preeclampsia, are leading causes of pregnancy-associated morbidity. Although insulin resistance and inflammation contribute to preeclampsia, prospective data regarding mechanisms of gestational hypertension are sparse. We conducted a prospective, nested case-control study to test the hypotheses that insulin resistance, ...

Few epidemiologic studies have examined the hypothesis that circulating androgens are involved in the development of ovarian cancer. We investigated the association between prediagnostic serum levels of androgens and sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) and ovarian cancer risk in a case-control study nested within the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition cohort. One hundr...

OBJECTIVE The evaluation of serum sex steroids and sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) levels in postmenopausal women with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and their association to the disease severity. DESIGN Twenty-two postmenopausal women with biopsy-proven NAFLD and 18 matched controls were recruited. Blood samples for serum SHBG, total testosterone, estradiol levels and standard ...

BACKGROUND It has been suggested that individuals with metabolic syndrome (MetS) may be prone to developing benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), but the direction of causality remains uncertain. The objective of this cross-sectional study was to evaluate the association between BPH and MetS in men who were referred to surgery for BPH. We were interested in identifying the anthropometric, metabol...

BACKGROUND Prolactin is a peptide hormone necessary for normal breast development that may contribute to breast tumorigenesis. Estrogen is a significant positive regulator of prolactin synthesis; therefore, raloxifene, a selective estrogen receptor modulator under study as a breast cancer prevention agent, may modulate both estradiol and prolactin levels by inhibiting estradiol from binding to ...

Testosterone, LH, FSH, PRL, and sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) were measured in 72 male epileptic patients on chronic anticonvulsant drug regimes. Sexual activity was estimated and plasma anticonvulsants measured. Total testosterone (TT), LH, FSH, PRL, and SHBG were increased; free testosterone (FT) was decreased. Sexual activity appeared diminished particularly in relation to reduced FT.

Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have successfully identified common genetic variants that contribute to breast cancer risk. Discovering additional variants has become difficult, as power to detect variants of weaker effect with present sample sizes is limited. An alternative approach is to look for variants associated with quantitative traits that in turn affect disease risk. As exposure...

A time-resolved immunofluorometric assay (trlFMA) for human sex-hormone binding globulin (SHBG) is described in which antibody-coated tubes or microliter strip-wells and a europium (Eu) chelate-labeled monoclonal antibody are used. The trlFMA sensitivity is similar to that of other SHBG immunoassays, and other analytical variables compare favorably with an SHBG immunoradiometric assay (IRMA) ki...

Background: The quality of testosterone assays has been amatter of debate for several years. Known limitations of testosterone immunoassays are the cross-reactivity with other steroids and a high variation in the low concentration range. We hypothesized that one of the additional limitations of testosterone immunoassays is an ineffective displacement of testosterone from its binding protein. Me...
