The trace mineral selenium inhibits cancer development in a variety of experimental animal models. We used an in vivo canine model to evaluate the effects of dietary selenium supplementation on DNA damage in prostate tissue and on apoptosis in prostate epithelial cells. Sexually intact elderly male beagle dogs were randomly assigned to receive an unsupplemented diet (control group) or diets tha...

OBJECTIVE Iodine deficiency has re-emerged in New Zealand, while selenium status has improved. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of excess iodine intake as iodate on thyroid and selenium status. METHODS In a randomized controlled trial on older people (mean±s.d. 73±4.8 years; n=143), two groups received >50  mg iodine as iodate/day for 8 weeks because of supplement formulat...

The threat of prostate cancer and the significant and often negative impact of its treatment underscore the importance of prevention. High-grade prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia (HGPIN) has been identified as a potential premalignant lesion marking an increased risk of prostate cancer and substantial evidence suggests that men with HGPIN are in need of prostate cancer prevention. In vitro, i...

Selenium is a promising cancer chemoprevention agent. A recent randomized controlled chemoprevention trial found that selenomethionine (SeMet) supplementation for 10 months favorably effected a change in esophageal dysplasia grade among participants who started the trial with mild dysplasia. To further explore the role of SeMet in this trial, we compared gene expression profiles by treatment gr...

PURPOSE Selenium is an essential trace mineral and a component of selenoproteins that are involved in the production of thyroid hormones and in regulating the immune response. We aimed to explore the effect of low-dose selenium supplementation on thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPO-Ab) concentration and thyroid function in pregnant women from a mild-to-moderate iodine-deficient population. METHO...

Previous studies have shown that transcription factors, API and NFkB exert important roles in the process by which selenium regulates spermatogenesis. Glutathione, an intracellular thiol, acts as a source of reducing power and aids in maintenance of the cellular redox status. The activities of selenium are closely related to the availability of glutathione. Presently, mouse testicular cells wer...

By a systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate clinically relevant effects of selenium supplementation in patients with chronic autoimmune thyroiditis. Controlled trials in adults (≥18 years) with autoimmune thyroiditis, comparing selenium with or without levothyroxine substitution, versus placebo and/or levothyroxine substitution, were eligible for inclusion. Identified outcomes were ...

We evaluated plasma selenium concentrations in patients with euthyroid sick syndrome express by low serum triiodothyronine (T3) concentrations. Selenium status in these patients was compared with that found in patients with both untreated and treated hypothyroidism. Selenium concentrations in plasma were significantly lower in hospitalized patients with either euthyroid sick syndrome (0.99 +/- ...

Selenium status was determined in an endemic-goiter area and in a control area of Zaire. Compared with the reference values of a noniodine-deficient area, serum selenium in subjects living in the core of the northern Zaire endemic-goiter belt (Karawa villages) was seven times lower in 52 school-children and similarly low in 23 cretins; erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase (RBC-GPX) was five times...

It was revealed that in the Tabriz region of the Islamic Republic of Iran the total amount of selenium in the poultry food and water was respectively 0.052+/-0.006 mg/kg and 0.008+/-0.001 mg/l. It is less than norm accepted in literature for poultry. That why selenium supplementation in the food allowances of poultry can positively effect on level of their productivity.
