We report the first case of inflammation of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) caused by Schistosoma mansoni and discuss its possible pathogenesis. This is of particular interest because the lesions resembled those found in acute multifocal placoid pigment epitheliopathy (AMPPE).

Introduction Human neuroschistosomiasis has been reported in the literature, but the possibility of modeling neuroschistosomiasis in mice is controversial. Methods In two research laboratories in Brazil that maintain the Schistosoma mansoni life cycle in rodents, two mice developed signs of brain disease (hemiplegia and spinning), and both were autopsied. Results S. mansoni eggs, both with and ...

The production of mAbs of various isotypes to Schistosoma mansoni has greatly contributed to the appreciation of the function of antibodies in the immunity against schistosomiasis, and has allowed the characterization of several potential protective antigens . Using this approach, we clearly established in previous studies (1, 2) the close relationship existing between a 38,000 Mr S. mansoni sc...

A 12 year-old boy in Germany developed urinary schistosomiasis in January 2014. He had bathed in rivers in south-eastern Corsica five months earlier. Before this case, human schistomiasis had not been reported on the island, although its vector, the snail Bulinus truncatus, locally transmitted the zoonotic Schistosoma bovis. The boy’s father excreted S. haematobium ova that were not viable; the...

Schistosomiasis, the most important parasitic disease in Egypt, has plagued its people since ancient times. Two species of Biomphalaria are reported from Egypt, the indigenous Biomphalaria alexandrina and Biomphalaria glabrata, the latter is believed to be introduced during the past few decades. Both are known to be excellent hosts of Schistosoma mansoni, in Egypt. SDS-PAGE was used to separate...

Schistosomiasis mansoni is usually a chronic infection that leads to long-term, systemic exposure to schistosome antigens. Experimental Schistosoma mansoni infection is associated with immunoregulatory mechanisms, including T regulatory cells (Treg) that may help control morbidity and dampen resistance to re-infection. We now show that some schistosomiasis mansoni patients have high proportions...

The viability of a hybrid between male Schistosoma haematobium (Dar es Salaam, Tanzania) and female S. intercalatum (Edea, Cameroun) was studied for up to the F7 hybrid generation and the biological characteristics of the hybrid were compared with those of each of the parental species. Using the total cercarial production/100 exposed snails/5 weeks value (TCP) as an index the hybrid miracidial ...

Schistosoma are dioecious digenetic trematodes carrying a large (270 Mb) genome. Gaining knowledge about the genome of these parasites is of importance for the understanding of their biology, mechanisms of drug resistance and antigenic variation that determine escape from the host's immune system. This review will provide an update on the Schistosoma Gene Discovery Program, which is part of the...

Adults of Schistosoma edwardiense Thurston, 1964, were recovered from Hippopotamus amphibius in the Kruger National Park. Small round to oval Schistosoma margrebowiei-like eggs, presumed to be those of S. edwardiense, were found fairly frequently in the faeces of infected hippopotami together with a few Schistosoma haematobium-like eggs the identity of which remains uncertain. Biomphalaria sp.,...
