In ATP synthase (F(O)F(1)-ATPase) ion flow through the membrane-intrinsic portion, F(O), drives the central "rotor", subunits c(10)epsilongamma, relative to the "stator" ab(2)delta(alphabeta)(3). This converts ADP and P(i) into ATP. Vice versa, ATP hydrolysis drives the rotation backwards. Covalent cross-links between rotor and stator subunits have been shown to inhibit these activities. Aiming...

This contribution introduces a hybrid GP/ES system for the evolution of chess playing computer programs. We discuss the basic system and examine its performance in comparison to pre-existing algorithms of the type alphabeta and its improved variants. We can show that evolution is able to outperform these algorithms both in terms of eÆciency and strength.

Although highly susceptible to orogastric candidiasis, T-cell receptor delta- and alpha-chain knockout mice, deficient in gammadelta and alphabeta T cells, respectively, were found to be resistant to disseminated candidiasis of endogenous origin and to acute systemic candidiasis (resulting from intravenous injection).

To investigate whether peripheral immune abnormalities are associated with brain inflammation in multiple sclerosis, and whether differences in MRI activity are paralleled by changes in leukocyte composition, we conducted a prospective longitudinal study in patients at their clinical onset. Twenty patients presenting a first inflammatory event in the central nervous system suggestive of multipl...

To elucidate the pharmacological profile of P2X receptors and the probable expression of P2Y receptors in otic ganglion neurons from 17-day-old rats, single neurons were enzymatically isolated and maintained in tissue culture for up to 30 h. Whole-cell voltage-clamp recording was carried out at a holding potential of -60 mV. Most otic ganglion neurons responded to adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP...

In this paper we define f − αβ-statistical convergence of order γ in probability and αβ-strong p-Ces`aro summability for a sequence random variables under unbounded modulus function examine the relation between these two concepts. We show by an example that notion is stronger than probability.

DAP12 is an ITAM-containing adaptor molecule conveying activating properties to surface receptors on many cell types. We show here that DAP12 paradoxically down-modulates plasmacytoid dendritic cell (pDC) cytokine production in vivo during murine CMV (MCMV) infection. Higher levels of IFN-alphabeta and IL-12 were detected upon MCMV infection or CpG treatment in DAP12-deficient (DAP12(o)) mice a...

GABAergic synapses likely contain multiple GABAA receptor subtypes, making postsynaptic currents difficult to dissect. However, even in heterologous expression systems, analysis of receptors composed of alpha, beta, and gamma subunits can be confounded by receptors expressed from alpha and beta subunits alone. To produce recombinant GABAA receptors containing fixed subunit stoichiometry, we coe...

Platelet glycoprotein Ib (GPIb)-binding proteins (GPIb-BPs) from snake venoms are usually C-type lectins, which target specific sites of GPIbalpha and elicit distinct effects on platelets. In the present paper, we report a tetrameric platelet-agglutinating factor (molecular mass 121.1 kDa), termed mucrocetin, purified from the venom of Taiwan habu (Trimeresurus mucrosquamatus ). Mucrocetin is a...
