This paper examines existing bidirectional ray tracing algorithms and the bottlenecks and possible benefits compared to backward tracing methods. The results of the implementation of one algorithm is provided. The article addresses the problems in the implementation of this a system including accurate probability calculation and efficient ray generation.

This paper deals with representing several of the phenomena that occur when light travels a curved path through inhomogeneous media, such as the well-known mirages. Traditional curved ray tracing presents several problems which have not been efficiently solved yet. We present here our approach based both on curved ray tracing and photon mapping, introducing the concept of curved photon mapping.

Ray tracing algorithms often approximate indirect diiuse lighting by means of an ambient lighting term. In this paper we show how a similar term can be used as a variance reducing technique for stochastic ray tracing. In a theoretical derivation we prove that the technique is mathematically correct. Test results demonstrate its usefulness and eeectiveness in practice.
