Wide-angle exclusive Compton scattering and single-pion photoproduction from the proton have been investigated via measurement of the polarization transfer from a circularly polarized photon beam to the recoil proton. The wide-angle Compton scattering polarization transfer was analyzed at an incident photon energy of 3.7 GeV at a proton scattering angle of θ_{cm}^{p}=70°. The longitudinal trans...

We present a detailed mechanism for the proton transfer from a protein-bound protonated water cluster to the bulk water directed by protein side chains in the membrane protein bacteriorhodopsin. We use a combined approach of time-resolved Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, molecular dynamics simulations, and X-ray structure analysis to elucidate the functional role of a hydrogen bond betw...

Spin transfer to Λ + c hyperons in polarized proton collisions at RHIC The analysis[1] of helicity transfer to Λ + c in polarized proton collisions is extended to the proton helicity correlations with the Λ + c transverse polarization in the production plane (parameter D LS). The available spin transfer observ-ables for the collisions of two longitudinally polarized protons are evaluated. It is...

We report first-principles calculations for a ferroelectric organic crystal of phenazine and chloranilic acid molecules. Weak intermolecular interactions are properly treated by using a second version of the van der Waals density functional known as vdW-DF2 [K. Lee et al., Phys. Rev. B 82, 081101 (2010)]. Lattice constants, total energies, spontaneous electric polarizations, phonon modes and fr...

A subtractive implementation of the QM/QM hybrid method for the description of photochemical reactions occurring in molecular crystals is presented and tested by applying it in a simulation study of the ultrafast intramolecular excited-state proton transfer reaction in the crystal form of 7-(2-pyridyl)-indole, an organic compound featuring an intramolecular hydrogen bond within a six-membered r...

Bacteriorhodopsin is probably the best understood proton pump so far and is considered to be a model system for proton translocating membrane proteins. The basis of a molecular description of proton translocation is set by having the luxury of six highly resolved structural models at hand. Details of the mechanism and reaction dynamics were elucidated by a whole variety of biophysical technique...

Experimental evidences related to the proton transfer in the catalytic system Pt-Cinchona alkaloids for enantioselective hydrogenation of activated ketones were collected and analyzed. Both new and earlier results indicate that in aprotic media direct transfer of proton from platinum to the substrate with the involvement of quinuclidine nitrogen as a general rule can be questioned.

Bovine heart cytochrome c oxidase is an electron-current driven proton pump. To investigate the mechanism by which this pump operates it is important to study individual electron- and proton-transfer reactions in the enzyme, and key reactions in which they are kinetically and thermodynamically coupled. In this work, we have simultaneously measured absorbance changes associated with electron-tra...

The kinetics and mechanism of proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) from a series of phenols to a laser flash generated [Ru(bpy)(3)](3+) oxidant in aqueous solution was investigated. The reaction followed a concerted electron-proton transfer mechanism (CEP), both for the substituted phenols with an intramolecular hydrogen bond to a carboxylate group and for those where the proton was directly...

Excited-state proton transfer from 5,8-dicyano-2-naphthol to methanol takes place in CO2/methanol mixtures, in the pressure and temperature ranges of supercritical CO2. The efficiency of the proton-transfer step decreases with the pressure. This is assigned to the perturbation of the methanol clusters solvating the naphthol.
