We present a rare case of multifocal Proteus mirabilis osteomyelitis in an HIV-positive patient. Despite the patient's good immune status as assessed by her CD4 cell count and the aggressive treatment, she eventually underwent bilateral above-knee amputations to eradicate the infection. Multifocal Proteus mirabilis osteomyelitis can have an unpredictable clinical course with a severe outcome in...

Many organizations envision web services as an enabling component of Internet-scale computing. A final vision of web services is to realize a dynamic environment that identifies, composes and executes web services in response to a query. This vision shapes the design and implementation of Proteus. In addition to describing Proteus’ novel components, this paper outlines its initial system design.

An electron microscope study of the nuclear membrane of Amoeba proteus by thin sectioning techniques has revealed an ultrastructure in the outer layer of the membrane that is homologous to the pores and annuli observed in the nuclear membranes of many other cell types studied by these techniques. An inner honeycombed layer apparently unique to Amoeba proteus is also described.

This paper reports on the development of thee Japanese Information Extraction system and the Japanese Information Extraction customization tool. These systems are based on the corresponding English systems, the Proteus Information Extraction system (Grishman 97) and the Proteus Extraction Tool (Yangarber and Grishman 97), developed at NYU. In this paper, we will, in particular, describe the dif...

Proteus mirabilis is one of the pathogenic agents that commonly causes urinary tract infections among elderly individuals and long-term catheterized patients. Here, we report a draft genome sequence of Proteus mirabilis strain PR03 (3,932,623 bp, with a G+C content of 38.6%) isolated from a local hospital in Malaysia.

The growth of Amoeba proteus (T1P) and Amoeba discoides (T1D) in the trypanocidal phenanthridinium, dimidium bromide was examined. At concentrations of drug between 2 and 4 /ig/ ml, A. proteus divided twice before inhibition and death. A. discoides was able to undergo an additional cycle of division before death. At other concentrations there were no differences in their response. Heterotransfe...

In this study we deal with the cultural properties, the products of growth, the pathogenicity, and the toxicity, of two strains of Proteus vulgaris, Hauser. This is an exceedingly interesting organism on account of its wide distribution, the ease with which it is modified, and because it seems to stand between the true saprophytic and the purely pathogenic bacteria. It has been found under a gr...

SXT/R391 integrative and conjugative elements (ICEs) are self-transmissible mobile genetic elements that are found in most members of Enterobacteriaceae. Here, we determined fifteen SXT/R391 ICEs carried by Proteus isolates from food (4.2%) and diarrhoea patients (17.3%). BLASTn searches against GenBank showed that the fifteen SXT/R391 ICEs were closely related to that from different Enterobact...

The in vitro susceptibility to cefamandole, cefoxitin, and cefuroxime of clinical isolates of Streptococcus faecalis, Klebsiella, and indole-positive Proteus was assayed using minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) determinations in broth and on solid media. It could be demonstrated that the agar dilution MICs obtained when S. faecalis was tested against cefuroxime and when indole-positive Prot...

Synthetic extreme environments like carwash effluent tanks and drains are potential sources of biotechnologically important microorganisms and molecules which have, however, remained unexplored. Using culture- and molecular-based methods, a total of 17 bacterial isolates belonging to the genera Shewanella, Proteus, Paenibacillus, Enterobacter and Citrobacter, Aeromonas, Pseudomonas and Pantoea ...
