OBJECTIVES Emergency admission is associated with the potential for adverse events in older people and risk prediction models are available to identify those at highest risk of admission. The aim of this study was to externally validate and compare the performance of the Probability of repeated admission (Pra) risk model and a modified version (incorporating a multimorbidity measure) in predict...

The DNA binding specificity of transcription factors (TFs) is typically represented in the form of a position weight matrix (PWM), also known as a DNA motif. A PWM is a matrix that specifies, for each position in the DNA binding site of a TF, the "weight" or contribution of each possible nucleotide. DNA motifs can be derived from various types of TF-DNA binding data, from small collections of k...

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the evolutionary process of imitation and innovation as a process of searching in a given neighbourhood of firms. Networks are the main source of information for firms willing to actively search and upgrade and which define the reachable neighbourhood whose width is strictly related to cognitive distance. We have identified two major forms of informat...

BACKGROUND accurately identifying individuals with cognitive impairment is difficult. Given the time constraints that many clinicians face, assessment of cognitive status is often not undertaken. The intent of this study is to determine the diagnostic accuracy of the Alzheimer's questionnaire (AQ) in identifying individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and AD. METHODS utilising a case...

It is difficult to determine adverse drug reactions (ADRs) in daily complicated clinical practice in which many kinds of drugs are prescribed. We evaluated how well the Naranjo Algorithm (NA) categorized ADRs among suspected ADRs. The Japan Adverse Drug Events (JADE) study was a prospective cohort study of 3459 inpatients. After all suspected ADRs were reported from research assistants, a singl...

BACKGROUND In Europe, a case-finding strategy for osteoporosis is recommended above widespread population-based screening. However, no universally accepted policy currently exists. In 2005, the Dutch College of General Practitioners published guidelines for GPs to select patients for dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). AIM To evaluate the sensitivity, specificity, and predictive value of ...

A latex agglutination test (LAT) based on polystyrene beads sensitized with inactivated avian influenza virus H5N1 particles was developed. Compared with the hemagglutination inhibition test, the sensitivity and specificity of the LAT were 88.8 and 97.6%, respectively, in detecting 830 serum samples from vaccinated chickens. The test has application potential in field practice.
