Six out of the 64 studied Proteus mirabilis isolates from 11 poultry farms in China contained Salmonella genomic island 1 (SGI1). PCR mapping showed that the complete nucleotide sequences of SGI1s ranged from 33.2 to 42.5 kb. Three novel variants, SGI1-W, SGI1-X, and SGI1-Y, have been characterized. Resistance genes lnuF, dfrA25, and qnrB2 were identified in SGI1 for the first time.
This study determined whether multilocus sequence types (MLST) of Campylobacter from poultry in 2 farms in Grenada, West Indies, differed by farm, antimicrobial resistance and farm antibiotic use. Farm A used fluoroquinolones in the water and Farm B used tetracyclines. The E-test was used to determine resistance of isolates to seven antibiotics. PCR of the IpxA gene confirmed species and MLST w...
The infection of wild birds by highly pathogenic strains of avian influenza (Al) virus was virtually unknown--apart from one instance of the disease appearing in common terns in South Africa in 1961--before the Asian strain of highly pathogenic AI virus (AIV), H5N1, began to expand across the world. Outbreaks of clinical disease in Eurasia have resulted in visible mortality among populations of...
Small-scale commercial poultry production is emerging as an important form of livestock production in Africa, providing sources of income and animal protein to many poor households, yet the occurrence and impact of coccidiosis on this relatively new production system remains unknown. The primary objective of this study was to examine Eimeria parasite occurrence on small-scale commercial poultry...
Highly pathogenic avian influenza A(H5N8) viruses were isolated from migratory waterfowl in South Korea during fall 2014-winter 2015, a recurrence after initial introduction in winter 2014. These reappeared viruses were phylogenetically distinct from isolates circulating in poultry farms in South Korea.
During March 2006, an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1) occurred in multiple poultry farms in Israel. The epidemiologic investigation and review of outbreak mitigation efforts uncovered gaps in planning for and containing the outbreak, thus affording valuable lessons applicable to other countries in similar settings.
The reuse of poultry litter is a common practice in the Brazilian poultry industry for flocks of healthy chickens, due to 2 fundamental aspects: production cost and environmental sustainability. Litter is a potentially important source of infection for Salmonella, which requires characterization by microbiological analysis in different aspects of management and reuse. The objective of this stud...
BACKGROUND English Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) immunized the poultry worker population with the seasonal influenza vaccine in the 2007 winter season. METHODS In Warwickshire, the provision of vaccinations progressed in two phases: four weekday evening clinics were offered initially, then one weekend clinic was offered, plus on-site vaccination at three farms and vaccination in general practice...
A cross sectional study was conducted from December 2013 to May 2014 with the objectives to isolate, identify and determine the antimicrobial resistance pattern of salmonella species from selected poultry farms in Debre zeit, Ethiopia. From a total of 196 cloacal swabs collected 50 (25.5%) were found to be positive for Salmonella organisms using culture method, and 15 (7.6%) Salmonella isolates...
The objective of the present study was to evaluate the capillary electrophoresis single-strand conformation polymorphism (CE-SSCP) to characterize poultry gut microbiota and the ability of this molecular method to detect modifications related to rearing conditions to be used as an epidemiological tool. The V3 region of the 16S rRNA gene was selected as the PCR target. Our results showed that th...
