Eighty-one elderly residents of a hostel for the aged (mean age 83.3 years) underwent clinical medical assessments to examine susceptibility to falling. The medical examination was structured and followed a clinical format with particular emphasis upon posture and gait, in addition to routine examination of the cardiovascular, respiratory, neurological, gastrointestinal, haemopoietic, genitouri...

The breeding structure of populations has been neglected in studies of Drosophila, even though Wright and Dobzhansky's pioneering work on the genetics of natural populations was an attempt to tackle what they regarded as an essential factor in evolution. We compared the breeding structure of sympatric populations of D. melanogaster and D. simulans, two sibling species that are widely used in ev...

—Once an abundant and conspicuous presence in wetlands across much of north-central North America, Trumpeter Swan ( Cygnus buccinator ) poplulations were decimated in the midto late 1800s by a combination of market hunting, subsistence hunting, and habitat loss. Since then, restoration has focused primarily on reintroduction efforts in which captive-reared birds are released and then monitored....

The intrinsic rate of natural increase, r, is a constant hat measures the ability of a population to grow under a given set of conditions. The Malthusian parameter, m, is a measure of genotypic rate of increase. Although the mathematical formulations for r and m are the same, their biological characteristics are different except in isogenic populations. Selection will always favor genotypes wit...

In this paper, we compute the scattering matrix for the Hilbert modular group over any number field K. We then express the determinant of the scattering matrix as a ratio of completed Dedekind zeta functions associated to the Hilbert class field of K. This generalizes work of Efrat and Sarnak [ES] in the imaginary quadratic case.

Common carp (Cyprinus carpio) represents one of the most economically important fish species in the Caspian Sea. In this study, growth and mortality parameters among population of common carp was investigated. Sampling was carried out weekly, using beach seine in the south of the Caspian Sea from October 2006 to September 2007. As a contribution to elaborating management programs for common car...

Modeling and performance of on-chip spiral inductors is presented. Y-parameters are obtained from the measured S-parameters of the inductor fabricated in 0.35-μm SOI CMOS technology. Matlab is used to get the π-equivalent circuit model parameters at each frequency point. The SOI CMOS inductor shows better performance characteristics in terms of Q-factor and self-resonance frequency.

This paper demonstrates a digital waveguide implementation of a six-hole woodwind tonehole lattice, based on theory and measurements published by Keefe (1981). Woodwind tonehole transmission-matrix parameters are converted to traveling-wave scattering parameters suitable for digital waveguide implementation. Second-order digital filters are designed to approximate the reflection and transmissio...

In the last ten years, the use of gamma-ray spectrometry for geological mapping and mineral exploration has shown considerable growth. With this growth, standardized procedures have been developed for the calibration and processing of the airborne measurements so that they will be independent of survey parameters. This paper describes some of the new developments to convert airborne data to gro...
