A new fluorescent sensor based on the BODIPY fluorophore and the polyamide receptor for Pb(2+) was designed and synthesized. The sensor is highly selective for Pb(2+) over relevant competing metal ions, and sensitive to ppb levels of Pb(2+). It features the most sensitive probe to date for Pb(2+) ions in water.

We computationally demonstrate that two-dimensional covalent triazine frameworks (CTFs) provide opportunities in water desalination. By varying the chemical building blocks, the pore structure, chemistry, and membrane performance can be designed, leading to two orders of magnitude higher water permeability than polyamide membranes while maintaining excellent ability to reject salts.

Acyclic diamines are valuable feedstocks for polyamide synthesis. Ruthenium-alkylidene catalysed cross metathesis of amino alkenes is problematic and acyl derivatisation can result in less efficient syntheses, poor catalyst turnover and isomerisation. Temporary amine masking via stable and soluble ammonium salts delivers cyclic and acyclic aminoalkenes in high yield and purity.

Polyamide 6 intercalated/exfoliated (PIE) cements are fabricated and characterized. We developed a method for the in situ synthesis of an oligoamide coating on gold. The resultant surface chemical composition, wettability, and chemical nature were comparable to aromatic polyamide films used as reverse osmosis membranes. Hence, the oligoamide wafer may be used in adsorption/fouling studies as a surface mimetic of reverse osmosis membranes.
