It was with great emotion that I accepted to be a guest speaker to this memorial section dedicated to my old-time friend, Prof. Radomir Ilić. In addition to being one of the most outstanding scientists in the field of nuclear tracks, Prof. Radomir Ilić has been always highly acclaimed by the scientific community for his enthusiasm, his warm friendship, and his great vitality. Through his succes...

Every large ICF laser facility, including Nova, OMEGA, and GEKKO, uses neutron time-of-flight (nTOF) systems to measure neutron yields and ion temperatures. Such nTOF systems are usually based on current-mode detectors consisting of a fast plastic scintillator optically coupled to a fast photomultiplier tube (PMT). A high-bandwidth transient digitizer records the signal. These systems, which ar...

Recent efforts have been made to improve the prompt fission neutron spectrum and nu-bar measurements for Uranium and Plutonium isotopes particularly in the keV region. A system has been designed at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) utilizing an array of EJ-301 liquid scintillators as well as lithium glass and plastic scintillators to experimentally determine these values. An array of BaF2 ...

The effects of UVC exposure on the track etch rate Vt and the detector sensitivity V of CR-39 SSNTDs were investigated through the diameters and depths of alpha-particle tracks. Both the bulk etch rate Vb and Vt increased but V decreased. The track diameters and depths were used to derive a V function for CR-39 detectors with and without UV irradiation. © 2008 Elsevier Ltd. We describe a simple procedure for reducing ADC common noise in modular detectors that does not require additional hardware. A method using detector noise groups should work well for modular particle detectors such as segmented electromagnetic calorimeters, plastic scintillator hodoscopes, cathode strip wire chambers, segmented active targets, and the like. We demonstrate a “second pedestal noi...

The properties of a new scintillation detector system for use in dosimetry of high-energy beams in radiotherapy have been measured. The most important properties of these detectors are their hgh spatial resolution and their nearly water-equivalence. Measurements have shown that they have excellent reproducibility and stability, and a linear response versus dose-rate. It is also shown that they ...

Two cylindrical forward TPC detectors are described which were constructed to extend the phase space coverage of the STAR experiment to the region 2.5 < |η| < 4.0. For optimal use of the available space and in order to cope with the high track density of central Au+Au collisions at RHIC, a novel design was developed using radial drift in a low diffusion gas. From prototype measurements a 2-trac...

Background: More than 50% of the total dose received by human beings from all sources of radiation (both from natural and manmade) comes from radon and its progeny which is responsible for lung cancer in many cases. Materials and Methods: In the present study, the measurements have been carried out by using twin chamber dosimeter cups with LR-115 type-II detectors. The value of track ...

Introduction: The aim of the present study was to determine the levels of alpha particles and heavy metals contamination in the meat products consumed in Najaf, Iraq. Moreover, this study was also targeted toward comparing the results with those in the literature and making appropriate conclusion and recommendations. Material and Methods: This study determined the track of alpha particles and ...
