In this study, the factors that influence the variability of soil to plant radionuclide transfer factors (TF) in tropical and subtropical environments were statistically analyzed. More than 2,700 TF values were obtained from the literature, and from this four broad soil groups and 13 plant groups were investigated. Additionally, different plant compartments were distinguished. The wide variabil...

Under a variety of assumptions, subsidized bidding for creative resources fails to spur economic growth. First, under many conditions, the resource would find an optimal location in any case. Second, the bid may be good for a winning city’s economy, but bad for the arts more generally. The bid winner is not necessarily the most appropriate home for the resource. Third, bids based on publicly av...

Photoperiod or daylength affects a diverse set of traits in plants, including flowering and tuberization in annuals, as well as growth cessation and bud set in perennials. During the last 10-15 years, great progress has been made in the understanding of molecular mechanisms controlling photoperiodic induction of flowering, in particular in the model species Arabidopsis thaliana. An obvious ques...

--Agroforestry is the deliberate introduction of multipurpose woody perennials (MWPs) into agroecosystems for the purpose of enhancing agricultural productivity, natural resource conservation, and human environments. This introduction promotes the biodiversity within the agroecosystem and thus its sustainability. This biodiversity is only a fraction of its potential due to the limited number an...

We consider the motions and associated flow patterns of a swimming giant danio (Danio malabaricus). Experimental flow-visualization techniques have been employed to obtain the unsteady two-dimensional velocity fields around the straight-line swimming motions and a 60 degrees turn of the fish in the centerline plane of the fish depth. A three-dimensional numerical method is also employed to pred...

The objective of this study was to compare the absorption and M. hyopneumoniae detection by real-time PCR using nylon-flocked and rayon-bud swabs. Results of this study showed that absorption and detection of M. hyopneumoniae were significantly higher in nylon-flocked swabs with Ct differences only ranging from 0.5 to 1.7.

Caterpillars of the spring brood of Nemoria arizonaria develop into mimics of the oak catkins upon which they feed. Caterpillars from the summer brood emerge after the catkins have fallen and they develop instead into mimics of oak twigs. This developmental polymorphism may be triggered by the concentration of defensive secondary compounds in the larval diet: all caterpillars raised on catkins,...

Health systems are serving increasingly ethnically diverse populations. This requires cultural sensitivity/competence. Sharing insights from multi-ethnic countries is important. Insights from Scotland, discussed in this paper, include that the creation of culturally sensitive health systems requires reduction of stigma associated with immigration and immigrants; the wider use of ethnicity along...
