Magnetic Eden clusters with ferromagnetic interaction between nearestneighbor spins are grown in a confined 2d-geometry with short range magnetic fields acting on the surfaces. The change of the growing interface curvature driven by the field and the temperature is identified as a non-equilibrium wetting transition and the corresponding phase diagram is evaluated.

Synthetic nanomotors powered by chemical reactions have potential uses as cargo transport vehicles in both in vivo and in vitro applications. In many situations, motors will have to operate in out-of-equilibrium complex chemically reacting media, which supply fuel to the motors and remove the products they produce. Using molecular simulation and mean-field theory, this paper describes some of t...

We investigate the macroscopic effects of the ingredients that drive the origin of species through sympatric speciation. In our model, sympatric speciation is obtained as we tune up the strength of competition between individuals with different phenotypes. As a function of this control parameter, we can characterize, through the behavior of a macroscopic order parameter, a phase transition from...

At present, the method adapted to analyze the phase equilibrium properties of refrigerant mixtures is as follows: Firstly, based on some experimental data of· phase equilibrium, the interactire factor bet~een the mixed refrigerants can be derived by using a equation of stalL Second!~ the rapour and liquid phase equilibrium properties are predicted by combining the mixed rule with phase equilibr...

Materials with interacting magnetic degrees of freedom display a rich variety of magnetic behaviour that can lead to novel collective equilibrium and out-of-equilibrium phenomena. In equilibrium, thermodynamic phases appear with the associated phase transitions providing a characteristic signature of the underlying collective behaviour. Here we create a thermally active artificial kagome spin i...

It has long been known that ferromagnets undergo a phase transition from ferromagnetic to paramagnetic at the Curie temperature, associated with critical phenomena such as a divergence in the heat capacity. A ferromagnet can also be transiently demagnetized by heating it with an ultrafast laser pulse. However, to date, the connection between out-of-equilibrium and equilibrium phase transitions,...

Understanding phase transitions in quantum matters constitutes a significant part of present day condensed matter physics. Quantum phase transitions concern ground state properties of many-body systems, and hence their signatures are expected to be pronounced in low-energy states. Here we report signature of a quantum critical point manifested in strongly out-of-equilibrium states with finite e...

We investigate the canonical equilibrium of systems with long-range forces in competition. These forces create a modulation in the interaction potential and modulated phases appear at the system scale. The structure of these phases differentiate this system from monotonic potentials, where only the mean-field and disordered phases exist. With increasing temperature, the system switches from one...

Collisionless stellar systems are driven towards equilibrium by mixing of phase-space elements. I show that the excess-mass function D( f ) = ∫ F̄(x,v)> f (F̄(x, v) − f ) d3xd3v (with F̄(x, v) the coarse-grained distribution function) always decreases on mixing. D( f ) gives the excess mass from values of F̄(x, v) > f . This novel form of the mixing theorem extends the maximum phase-space density a...
