Leishmaniasis is a disease caused by a malaria-like parasite called Leishmania in human and some species of animals. Detection of leishmaniasis has always been crucial for control and treatment of the disease. Different strategies have been approached for detection of leishmania. In this review methods used for detection of leishmania infection have been discussed and compared.

In this study, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was compared with detection of specific antibodies to Toxoplasma by ELISA. A total of 70 blood samples from patients with different clinical features were tested, 43/70 (61.4%) were serologically Toxoplasma-IgG positive meanwhile only 16/43 (37.2%) were approved to be positive by PCR. A total of 22 samples (31.6%) were positive by PCR, but only 16 ...

A group of 180 patients with diagnosed Lyme borreliosis were examined for the presence of infection with Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (B. burgdorferi s.l.) by serologic tests with B. burgdorferi s.l. antigens (IgM-ELISA, IgG-ELISA, IgM-immunoblot, IgG-immunoblot) and by polymerase chain reaction (PCR, nested-PCR) for detection of B. burgdorferi s.l. DNA in peripheral blood. A total of 61.7 %...

Five diagnostic techniques performed on skin biopsies (shoulder region) and/or serum were compared for detection of bovine viral diarrhea virus infection in 224 calves 0-3 months of age, 23 calves older than 3 months but younger than 7 months, and 11 cattle older than 7 months. The diagnostic methods used were immunohistochemistry (IHC), 2 commercial antigen ELISAs, 1 commercial antibody ELISA,...

In order to elucidate the usefulness of various tests in the early course of dengue infection, in terms of diagnosis and correlation with clinical severity, blood specimens were collected every 48 hours on 3 occasions from patients with clinical suspicion of dengue infection with fever for less than 4 days. Viral isolation was attempted by mosquito inoculation (MI), tissue culture inoculation (...

Loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) combined with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (LAMP-ELISA) and with lateral flow dipstick (LAMP-LFD) are rapid, sensitive and specific methods for the visual detection of clinical pathogens. In this study, LAMP-ELISA and LAMP-LFD were developed for the visual detection of canine parvovirus (CPV). For LAMP, a set of four primers (biotin-labeled for...

Bovine leukaemia virus (BLV) is a retrovirus that induces a chronic infection in cattle. Once infected, cattle remain virus carriers for life and start to show an antibody response within a few weeks after infection. Eradication and control of the disease are based on early diagnostics and segregation of the carriers. The choice of a diagnostic method depends on the eradication programme, money...

AIMS The purpose of this study was to develop a reliable molecular procedure for the detection of Escherichia coli in milk. METHODS AND RESULTS Robust and expeditious DNA extraction and PCR techniques were evaluated using Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) detection of biotin-labelled amplicons to facilitate optimal detection of E. coli DNA. CONCLUSIONS It was found that 5 E. coli co...
