A case of chronic sinus disease due to morphologically atypical Aspergillus flavus is described. Multiple fungal isolates sporulated poorly or not at all, displaying unusual color and microscopic morphology, including the absence of typical vesicles and phialides, which caused the isolates to resemble several other fungal genera superficially. The patient received multiple antifungal therapies ...
Idiopathic expansion of a paranasal sinus containing air and without an associated mass has been termed pneumosinus dilatans [1] . This rare disorder has been known to occur in all the paranasal sinuses, but it most commonly affects the frontal sinus. Clinical symptoms include pain , visual loss, proptosis, galactorrhea, and hypopituitarism [2-4]. Proposed mechanisms of origin include developme...
A very low incidence of complications of rehabilitating jaw with implant therapy ismigration of dental implants into maxillary sinus. Implant migration into the maxillary sinus may be followed by sign of infection and oroantral communication. This way, paranasal sinus function will be appearing altered after the implant migration and hence implant removal is utmost important.
501 Lateral Rectus Muscle Palsy Secondary to Sphenoid Sinusitis: A Case Report and Literature Review
Abstract Background Isolated sphenoid sinus disease (ISSD) is a rare, often misdiagnosed condition of the paranasal sinus. If left untreated, it can lead to complications involving pituitary gland, cavernous sinus, neurologic, and vascular structures nearby. Case report We present case 60-year-old female with history severe left-sided headache, facial pain, diplopia, lateral rectus palsy. She w...
OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS To describe surgical outcomes and radiographic features of olfactory groove meningiomas treated by excision through the subcranial approach. Special emphasis is placed on paranasal sinus and orbit involvement. STUDY DESIGN Retrospective review of a series of patients. METHODS Nineteen patients underwent excision of olfactory groove meningioma (OGM) via the transglabell...
Abstract Pneumosinus dilatans (PSD) is a rare disorder that causes aberrant paranasal sinus dilation. typically benign and asymptomatic, without any evidence of bone destruction or pathologic changes in the underlying mucosa. Localized discomfort, headaches, facial paraesthesia deformities, sensory deficits, olfactory loss, ocular abnormalities are common complaints. The diagnosis PSD confirmed...
OBJECTIVES In the paranasal sinus fungal ball (SFB), changes that occur in the underlying bone have not been well described. Recently, bacterial coinfection has been reported in patients with paranasal SFB. We evaluated whether bone changes occur in patients with unilateral maxillary SFB, and also how bacteria in an SFB affect the bony wall of the sinus. METHODS A retrospective study of patie...
Fibrous dysplasia is an uncommon benign disease of the bone, with slow progression. Monostotic involvement of the paranasal sinuses is rare. We report a 54year-old woman who had complaints of facial asymmet r y, chronic sinusitis, recurrent headaches, and nasal obstruction for two years. Conventional radiography showed opacification and expansion of the maxillary sinus. Axial and coronal comput...
Between November 2010 and December 2011, a certified radiologist retrospectively reviewed 510 computed tomographic images of the paranasal sinuses ordered by otolaryngologists at Okmeydanı Training and Research Hospital. Medical records, endoscopic nasal examinations, MRC size, and cyst: sinus size ratios were evaluated in patients with MRCs. The prevalence and characteristics of MRCs in the pa...
Polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma (PLGA) is a malignant neoplasm that tends to follow a benign clinical course. Recurrences are uncommon. We report a case of recurrent PLGA of the paranasal sinuses that manifested as a large mass that filled the entire nasal cavity and left maxillary sinus. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of a recurrent PLGA of the paranasal sinuses.
