Carl Bereiter’s article “Toward a solution of the learning paradox” appeared in 1985, was widely read and cited, but did not end the discussion about the “learning paradox”. My contribution is an attempt to show that it is in fact a spurious problem and that the paradox springs from unwarranted traditional views of knowledge and conceptualization. A constructivist orientation adopting Peirce’s ...

Several studies verify and emphasize the obesity paradox but they do not offer any evident explanation for the paradox. Obesity paradox explanation by pathogenetic action mechanisms of parathyroid hormone-related protein and calcitonin gene-related peptide is evaluated. The vasodilatant action of these peptides has been taken into consideration in decreasing the peripheral arterial vascular ton...

We compare behavior across students and professional traders from the Chicago Board of Trade in a classic Allais paradox experiment. Our experiment tests whether independence, a necessary condition in expected utility theory, is systematically violated. We find that both students and professionals exhibit some behavior consistent with the Allais paradox, but the data pattern does suggest that t...

This paper discusses the Three Prisoners paradox in the light of three different procedures for the updating of probabilities Bayesian conditioning, superconditioning and Jeffrey's rule as well as assuming the unpredictability of receipt of information by prisoner A. The formulation of the paradox in this temporal setting brings new insight to the problem and, on the other hand, the paradox is ...

The twin paradox, as well other paradoxes, are not solved. The long term resistance of the paradoxes shows, that the discussions will remain until the Second Coming. How then one can grasp the problem? This question as well technical proves of the twin paradox one finds in this paper. There is link to the experimental paper on the Ehrenfest Paradox. It is something huge, people, please read all...

We consider optimal distributed decisions in distributed computer systems. We identify a Braess-like paradox in which adding capacity to the system may degrade the performance of all users. Unlike the original Braess paradox, we show that this behavior occurs only in the case of finitely many users and not in the case of infinite number of users. keywords Braess paradox, Nash equilibrium, Wardr...

Leonardo Motta [email protected] Conselheiro Furtado, J 574/50 I Helem, PA 66040-100, Hra=il The Smarandache Paradox is a very interesting paradox of logic because it has a background common sense. However, at the same time, it gets in a contradiction with itself. Although it may appear well cohesive, a careful look on the science definition and some logic can break down this paradox showing...

Electronic Patient Record (EPR) is an area of research in EHealth that is progressing rapidly due to its demand and rapid growth of Information Technology used in the Health Management Organizations (HMO). Benefits of having EPR are the timely access of critical data, inclusion of multimedia, and the ease of availability and distribution, those making it more presentable, distributable, efficie...

We investigate the relation between monotonicity and the no-show paradox in voting rules. Although the literature has established their logical independence, we show, by presenting logical dependency results, that the two conditions are closer than a general logical independency result would suggest. Our analysis is made both under variable and fixed-size electorates.
