An experimental ovine fetal model for perinatal pulmonary hypertension of the neonate (PPHN) was characterized by altered pulmonary vasoreactivity and structure. Because past studies had suggested impaired nitric oxide-cGMP cascade in this experimental model, we hypothesized that elevated phosphodiesterase (PDE) activity may contribute to altered vascular reactivity and structure in experimenta...

The workup and management of the solitary pulmonary nodule is an increasingly common and confounding clinical problem for which a uniformly accepted approach has yet to be established. Conventional radiologic literature has suggested a number of imaging characteristics of nodules such as size, cavitation, growth rate, and margin morphology to guide the physician in clinical management. More rec...

BACKGROUND Pulmonary exacerbations (PEx) in cystic fibrosis (CF) are a frequent cause of hospitalisations and lead to long-term decline in pulmonary function. Successful CF inpatient care requires the coordination of multiple providers and complex therapies. Children's Hospital of Wisconsin (CHW) and Children's Healthcare of Atlanta (CHoA) independently identified PEx inpatient care for focused...

Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae is a respiratory pathogen that impacts domestic sheep (Ovis aries; DS) and bighorn canadensis; BHS). BHS are reported to be more susceptible than DS developing polymicrobial pneumonia associated with M. infection. Using formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissues, we performed retrospective study investigating the pulmonary immune response of infected exhibited robust well...

Ca2+-sensitive K+ (K(Ca)) channels play an important role in mediating perinatal pulmonary vasodilation. We hypothesized that lung K(Ca) channel function may be decreased in persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN). To test this hypothesis, pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells (PASMC) were isolated from fetal lambs with severe pulmonary hypertension induced by ligation of the duc...

BACKGROUND The growing awareness of transfusion-associated morbidity and mortality necessitates investigations into the underlying mechanisms. Small animals have been the dominant transfusion model but have associated limitations. This study aimed to develop a comprehensive large animal (ovine) model of transfusion encompassing: blood collection, processing and storage, compatibility testing ri...

RATIONALE Pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) has demonstrated physiological, symptom-reducing, psychosocial, and health economic benefits for patients with chronic respiratory diseases, yet it is underutilized worldwide. Insufficient funding, resources, and reimbursement; lack of healthcare professional, payer, and patient awareness and knowledge; and additional patient-related barriers all contribu...

Invasive pulmonary mucormycosis and aspergillosis are rare, life-threatening fungal infections. Most documented cases have been reported in non-cirrhotic patients with diabetes mellitus, neutropenia, or treatment with corticosteroids. The prevalence of each infection is low among patients with hepatic cirrhosis. We report the first likely case of combined invasive pulmonary mucormycosis and asp...

Worldwide, the Mycobacterium bovis BCG vaccine is one of the most widely used vaccines. However, it appears to be ineffective in preventing pulmonary tuberculosis. Here, we show that pulmonary BCG vaccination of mice with a broad dose range provides superior protection against Mycobacterium tuberculosis challenge compared to that of subcutaneous vaccination.

Pulmonary thromboembolism is a common condition. Its diagnosis usually requires pulmonary scintigraphy, computed angiotomography, pulmonary arteriography and, in order to rule out other diagnoses, the measurement of D-dimer levels. Due to the fact that these diagnostic methods are not available in most Brazilian hospitals, the validation of other diagnostic techniques is of fundamental importan...
