The oxidative stability indices (OSI) of several vegetable oils were determined at 11O°e. Meadowfoam oil, Limnanthes alba, was found to be the most stable oil with an OSI time of 67.3 h for refined oil and 246.9 h for crude oil. Other oils with good oxidative stabilities were refined high oleic sunflower and crude jojoba oil (Simmondsia chinensis) with OSI times of 49.8 and 34.5 h respectively....

The aim of this study was to investigate the effective concentration of ethanolic extract  of bee pollen on liver, spleen and heart tissues of fish. Bee pollen extract in various concentrations (0.5, 2.5, 5, 10, 20 and 30 ppm) was administered to fish for 96 h under aquarium conditions. The malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, total antioxidant status (TAS), total oxidant status (TOS), oxidative stres...

PURPOSE Hemodynamics has a key role in atheropathogenesis. Indeed, atherosclerotic phenomena occur in vessels characterized by complex geometry and flow pattern, like the carotid bifurcation. Moreover, lifestyle is a significant risk factor. The aim of this study is to evaluate the hemodynamic effects due to two sedentary lifestyles - sitting and standing positions - in the carotid bifurcation ...

BACKGROUND Chlorpyrifos (CPF), insecticide widely used in agriculture, may cause poisonings in the case of humans. As a result, there is a large amount of treatment research underway to focus on the possibility of chlorpyrifos induced poisonings. The aim of this study has been to evaluate the effects of caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) and intralipid (IL) on hepatotoxicity induced by chlorpy...

BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to evaluate oxidative stress in various clinical forms of hepatitis B infection and to investigate its role in the development of the chronic form of the disease. METHODS Ninety-three patients with inactive hepatitis B surface antigen (HbsAg) carrier state (IHBCS), 65 patients with chronic hepatitis B infection (CHB), and 42 healthy adults were included in...

BACKGROUND Impaired oxidative/antioxidative status plays an important role in the pathogenesis of many diseases like cancer. The aim of this study was to evaluate the levels of the novel marker ischemia modified albumin (IMA) and albumin adjusted-IMA (Adj-IMA) in patients with bladder cancer (BC) as well as its association with total antioxidant status (TAS), total oxidant status (TOS) and oxid...

OBJECTIVES This study evaluated the degree and rate of implant stability development for photofunctionalized dental implants in humans. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirty-three implants (7 patients) placed in the maxilla and immediate loaded were evaluated. Photofunctionalization was performed by treating implants with ultraviolet for 15 minutes immediately before placement. Implant stability was a...

This study was performed to investigate the effect of ethyl pyruvate on changes in renal functions and oxidative stress related renal injury caused by cisplatin (cis-dichlorodiammine platinum-II; CDDP). Male Wistar albino rats were divided into four groups (n = 8): (1) control group (1 ml Ringer's lactate solution i.p.); (2) ethyl pyruvate (EP) group (50 mg/kg Ringer's EP solution (REPS) i.p.);...

The transcript levels of three genes coding for antioxidants, Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase and phospholipid hydroperoxide glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), and those of two stress proteins, metallothionein (MT) and CYP1A, were examined with real-time quantitative (q) RT-PCR in hepatic tissue of Atlantic cod exposed to 46% (hypoxia), 76% (normoxia) and 145% (hyperoxia) O(2) saturati...

BACKGROUND F. hepatica infection is rare and mostly subclinical. Migration of juvenile forms of F. hepatica into the host's liver is accompanied by an inflammatory reaction followed by fibrosis and cirrhosis. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to evaluate oxidative status by using a novel automated method in patients with Fasciola hepatica. METHODS Twenty two patients with a diagnosis of F...
