Sternoclavicular (SC) dislocation is a rare injury of the upper extremity. Treatment of posterior SC dislocation ranges from conservative (closed reduction) to operative (open reduction with or without surgical reconstruction of the SC joint). To date, we are unaware of any literature that exists pertaining to this injury or its treatment in elite athletes. The purpose of this case report is to...

Automated CAD model simplification plays an important role in effectively utilizing physicsbased simulation during the product realization process. Currently a rich body of literature exists that describe many successful techniques for fully-automatic or semi-automatic simplification of CAD models for a wide variety of applications. The purpose of this paper is to compile a list of the techniqu...

Background: Treatment of neglected developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) in children after the walking age has been a challenge to the orthopedic surgeons. It is usually surgical at this age ground. Methods: The study included 12 patients, they had been treated by different combinations of open reduction, femoral (shortening, derotation and varus) and pelvic (Salter) osteotomy. The age at th...

BM3D is a recent denoising method based on the fact that an image has a locally sparse representation in transform domain. This sparsity is enhanced by grouping similar 2D image patches into 3D groups. In this paper we propose an open-source implementation of the method. We discuss the choice of all parameter methods and confirm their actual optimality. The description of the method is rewritte...

One problem that arises with the increasing numbers of students in Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) is that of student evaluation. The large number of students makes it infeasible for the instructors or the teaching assistants to grade all assignments, while the present auto-grading technology is not feasible for many topics of interest. As a result, there has recently been a great push for ...

Sensory pathways in the nervous system possess mechanisms for decreasing spike-timing variability ("jitter"), probably to increase acuity. Most studies of jitter reduction have focused on convergence of many subthreshold inputs. However, many neurons receive only a few active inputs at any given time, and jitter reduction under these conditions is not well understood. We examined this issue usi...

Six-dimensional ionization cooling of muons is essential for muon colliders and possibly beneficial for neutrino factories. An experiment to demonstrate six-dimensional ionization cooling using practical apparatus is presented. It exploits recent innovative ideas that may lead to six-dimensional muon-cooling channels with emittance reduction approaching that needed for high-luminosity muon coll...

Severe laryngeal trauma is rare in the civilian environment and requires appropriate and timely surgical intervention. We report a case from Sydney, Australia, which was managed with open reduction and internal fixation of the larynx with resorbable plates. The use of resorbable plates for operative fixation of the larynx has rarely been reported in literature but may be a viable alternative.

BACKGROUND Purpura-free elimination of telangiectases with a single pass of a pulsed dye laser with a large spot has proved difficult. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this report was to define parameters that achieve single-pass purpura-free telangiectasia reduction. MATERIALS Thirty patients between the ages of 23 and 78 years were treated with a pulsed dye laser with a 10-mm spot and fluences ra...
