The selective synthesis of the [Rh5(CO)15](-) cluster within the PPI dendrimer was successfully demonstrated. The dendrimer-encapsulated [Rh5(CO)15](-) was resistant to decomposition under the catalytic reaction conditions and exhibited extremely high selectivity for the chemoselective reduction of nitro groups of various nitro aromatics with other reducible groups using CO/H2O as a reductant.

The β-sheet structure associated with chlorinated aromatics (d(Cl···Cl)≈ 4.0 Å) has been implemented to drive formation of π-stacked structures of dithiadiazolyl radicals. Both title compounds exhibit an increase in paramagnetism above 150 K but solid-state EPR studies indicate that the origin of the paramagnetism in these two systems is different.

We used PacBio sequencing to assemble the genome of the pristine freshwater isolate Geobacter pickeringii G13(T) into a single 3,618,700-bp circular chromosome polished to 99.999% accuracy (quality value [QV], 50). This isolate shares several features with other Geobacter spp., including genes for degradation of aromatics and an abundance of multiheme c-type cytochromes.

Six 3-methylpyridine zwitterions and six quinoline zwitterions were synthesized through the reaction of 4-hydroxycoumarins, p-benzoquinone and the corresponding N-aromatics. The novel pseudo-cyclic face-to-face rigid structure of the zwitterion was elucidated by (1)H-NMR at different temperatures, and assumed to be caused by both the intramolecular ion pair attraction and the steric interaction.

Pseudomonas putida CBF10-2 is a microorganism isolated from farmland soil in Fairchild, TX, found to degrade high-impact xenobiotics, including organophosphate insecticides, petroleum hydrocarbons, and both monocyclic and polycyclic aromatics. The versatility of CBF10-2 makes it useful for multipurpose bioremediation of contaminated sites in agricultural and industrial environments.

Regioselective methanesulfonylation of simple aromatics using methanesulfonic anhydride can be achieved over zeolite catalysts. For example, methanesulfonylation of toluene over various cation-exchanged zeolite beta catalysts affords higher para-selectivity in the synthesis of methyl tolyl sulfone than standard Friedel-Crafts methanesulfonylation utilising aluminium chloride.

Pseudomonas monteilii is a versatile bacterium found in various niches. A newly isolated strain, P. monteilii QM, can effectively produce indigoids from indoles. Here we present a 5.76-Mb assembly of the P. monteilii genome for the first time. It may provide abundant molecular information for the transformation of aromatics.

Simple and convenient Lewis acid-catalyzed Friedel-Crafts alkylations of 2-oxindoles as electron rich aromatics with 3-hydroxy-2-oxindoles as electron deficient partners have been developed. The reaction afforded a variety of dimeric 2-oxindoles with a C-3/C-5' linkage having an all-carbon quaternary center at the pseudobenzylic position in high yields.

Gas chromatographic prediction of poly-aromatics retention indices in a petroleum crude oil based on matching with reported retention indices on the same stationary phases under a similar temperature program was studied. The bases of the matching with reported retention indices for peaks identifications were mentioned. Deconvulated software was used to separate the overlapped poly-aromatic peaks.
