We consider some nonlinear phenomena in metamaterials with negative refractive index properties. Our consideration includes a survey of previously known results as well as identification of the phenomena that are important for applications of this new field. We focus on optical behavior of thin films as well as multi-wave interactions.
We measure the nonlinear refractive index coefficients in N₂, O₂, and Ar from visible through mid-infrared wavelengths (λ=0.4-2.4 μm). The wavelengths investigated correspond to transparency windows in the atmosphere. Good agreement is found with theoretical models of χ((3)). Our results are essential for accurately simulating the propagation of ultrashort mid-infrared pulses in the atmosphere.
We address soliton reflection/transmission at interface between a uniform medium and an optical lattice with focusing Kerr nonlinearity. We reveal that such interfaces afford rich new opportunities for controlling the reflection and transmission coefficients and the nonlinear Snell law, the key control parameters being the spatial frequency and depth of refractive index modulation in the lattice.
Spatial structures as a result of a modulational instability are studied in a nonlinear cavity with a photonic crystal. The interaction of the modulated refractive index with the nonlinearity inhibits the instability via the creation of a photonic band gap. A novel mechanism of light localization due to defects and pattern inhibition is also described.
It is demonstrated that the dynamics of small-amplitude dark solitons in optical fibers may be described by the wellknown Korteweg-de Vries equation. This approach allows us to explain analytically the temporal self-shift of dark solitons due to the Raman contribution to the nonlinear refractive index, which has been observed experimentally by Weiner et al. [Opt. Lett. 14, 868 (1989)].
By means of a quantitative shadowgraphic method, we performed a space-time characterization of the refractive index variation and transient absorption induced by a light-plasma filament generated by a 120 fs laser pulse in water. The formation and evolution of the plasma channel in the proximity of the nonlinear focus were observed with a 23 fs time resolution.
Optical nonlinearities of periodically poled LiNbO(3) crystals were investigated by the single beam Z-scan technique with a continuous wave (cw) laser beam at 532 nm. The nonlinear optical absorption coefficient and refractive index change are determined to be 8.1 x 10(-6) cm/W and 2.6 x 10(-4) at 0.5 MW/cm(2) light intensity, respectively. Both sign and magnitude of the measured refractive non...
The nonlinear coefficients, n4, of the time-dependent refractive index for argon are calculated in the non-resonant optical regime. Second-order polynomial fitting of DC-Kerr, γ((2))(-ω; ω, 0, 0), electric field induced second harmonic generation (ESHG), γ((2))(-2ω; ω, ω, 0), and static second-order hyperpolarizability, γ((2))(0; 0, 0, 0), is performed using an auxiliary electric field approach...
The design and analysis of a dielectric guided-mode resonance filter (GMRF) utilizing a nonlinear material for the waveguide is presented. Small changes to the parameters of a GMRF have a large impact on its resonance. A nonlinear material can provide a small change in the refractive index of the waveguide, altering the resonance of the device and resulting in modulation of the transmitted and ...
