we study the coherent spin-polarized transport through a zigzag-edge graphene flake (zgf), using hubbard model in the nearest neighbor approximation within the framework of the green function’s technique and landauer formalism. the system considered consists of electrode/ (zgf)/electrode, in which the electrodes are chosen to be armchair nanoribbons. the study was performed for two types of ele...

We study hydrogen chemisorption at full coverage and low concentrations on hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN). Chemisorption trends reveal the complex nature of hydrogenation. Barriers for diffusion are found to be significantly altered by the presence of additional H atoms. Moreover, the presence of a Stone-Wales defect may dramatically enhance the bond strength of H to the h-BN surface. These fin...

A creative hydrothermal synthesis method followed by calcination for vanadium nitride (VN) is reported. The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) study of the catalyst shows that VN possesses a comparable catalytic performance to commercial Pt/C catalyst. The ORR catalytic activity study of vanadium nitride, vanadium carbonitride, and vanadium carbide reveals that tuning anions offers a promising rou...

A simple method is presented for exfoliating and suspending hexagonal boron nitride using a co-solvent approach. A 60 w/w% concentration of tert-butanol in water is very effective at exfoliating boron nitride especially when compared to the individual components alone as indicated by UV-vis and transmission electron microscopy. Molecular weight and surface tension are found to play inverse role...

We present experimental evidence that the room temperature thermal conductivity (kappa) of individual multiwalled carbon and boron-nitride nanotubes does not obey Fourier's empirical law of thermal conduction. Because of isotopic disorder, kappa's of carbon nanotubes and boron-nitride nanotubes show different length dependence behavior. Moreover, for these systems we find that Fourier's law is ...

Achieving comprehensive information on thin film lattice dynamics so far has eluded well established spectroscopic techniques. We demonstrate here the novel application of grazing incidence inelastic x-ray scattering combined with ab initio calculations to determine the complete elastic stiffness tensor, the acoustic and low-energy optic phonon dispersion relations of thin wurtzite indium nitri...

We report an interesting observation of minimization of bacterial attachment on titanium nitride coatings of increased thickness. DC magnetron sputtering method was used to prepare titanium nitride coatings of different thickness and the attachment of an oral bacteria Porphyromonas gingivalis was studied. With increase in thickness of the coatings the particle size increased and the order of ba...
