Since consumers are showing increased interest in the origin and method of production of their food, it is important to be able to authenticate dietary history of animals by rapid and robust methods used in the ruminant products. Promising breakthroughs have been made in the use of spectroscopic methods on fat to discriminate pasture-fed and concentrate-fed lambs. However, questions remained on...

For the non-invasive visualization of cell migration in deep tissues, we synthesized a short-wavelength infrared (SWIR) emitting multimodal probe that contains PbS/CdS quantum dots, rhodamine 6G and iron oxide nanoparticles. This probe enables multimodal (SWIR fluorescence/magnetic resonance) imaging of phagocyte cell migration in living mice.

Southwest Indian Ridge (SWIR) is a typical oceanic ultraslow spreading ridge with intensive hydrothermal activities. The microbial communities in hydrothermal fields including primary producers to support the entire ecosystem by utilizing geochemical energy generated from rock-seawater interactions. Here we have examined the microbial community structures on four hydrothermal vents from SWIR, r...

In harsh environmental conditions characterized by unfavorable lighting and pronounced shadows, human recognition based on Short-Wave Infrared (0.9-1.7 microns) images may be advantageous. SWIR imagery (i) is more tolerant to low levels of obscurants like fog and smoke; (ii) the active illumination source can be eye-safe and (iii) the active illumination source is invisible to the human eye mak...

In the 1980s, near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy was first applied in agriculture in China. In the 1990s, NIR spectroscopy was gradually accepted as a fascinating analytical technology by some analytical scientists and factory managers, because it possesses several attractive advantages, such as needing no or minimal sample preparation, low cost, high speed and high efficiency. In the 2000s, NIR ...

This study investigated the viability of quantifying affinity between aggregate and bitumen by means different imaging techniques. Experiments were arranged in accordance with rolling-bottle test, as indicated UNI EN 12697-11, “Test methods for hot bituminous conglomerates—Part 11”. Digital image processing (DIP) techniques have only recently been used such quantification. The data gathered a m...

Frequent cloud cover over the Amazon region is the greatest limitation to monitor, via optical remote sensing systems, ongoing activities that are threatening the greatest rainforest of the world. Current optical remote sensing satellites do not have sufficient temporal and spatial resolution in order to be used as operational monitoring system. For instance, with the Landsat system it has been...

We present results using near-infrared (NIR) cameras to study emission characteristics of common defect classes for integrated circuits (ICs). The cameras are based on a liquid nitrogen cooled HgCdTe imaging array with high quantum efficiency and very low read noise. The array was developed for infrared astronomy and has high quantum efficiency in the wavelength range from 0.8 to 2.5 pm. For co...
