The finite-difference beam propagation method based on the Douglas scheme is extended to a nonuniform grid. The truncation error is reduced to ~ ( A z ) ~ , provided the grid growth factor is r = 1 + ~ ( A z ) , while maintaining a tridiagonal matrix.
