Mesoporous SnO2 with a high surface area of 292.7 m(2) g(-1) has been successfully synthesized via a low-cost NH4Cl-based ionothermal route. When evaluated as a gas sensor, impressive performances towards N2H4 and HCHO are achieved owing to its excellent chemical reactivity towards oxygen.

The ability of the kidneys to excrete an acid urine is often assessed by correlating plasma carbon dioxide and urine pH. A low plasma CO2 should be accompanied by a low urine pH, provided that respiratory function is normal. Buchanan and Komrower (1958) consider that the renal excretion of hydrogen ions is normal in children if urine pH falls below 5 0, after a single dose of 0g./kg. of ammoniu...

Experiments study large-scale pattern formation during the growth of ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) from solution in a thin (Hele-Shaw) geometry. In particular a solid-liquid mixture ("mushy layer") forms in which growing solid NH4Cl crystals form a solid network interspersed with liquid. There are different ways that the mushy layer can be formed, however. If the cell is heated from below and coole...

We previously reported that the deletion of the pH sensor GPR4 causes a non-gap metabolic acidosis and defective net acid excretion (NAE) in the GPR4 knockout mouse (GPR4-/-) (Sun X, Yang LV, Tiegs BC, Arend LJ, McGraw DW, Penn RB, and Petrovic S. J Am Soc Nephrol 21: 1745-1755, 2010). Since the major regulatory site of NAE in the kidney is the collecting duct (CD), we examined acid-base transp...

Previous research has shown that applications of chemical stimuli to the epiglottis produced distinct patterns of activity in the lamb superior laryngeal nerve. To determine the response characteristics of second-order neurons, we recorded from single cells in the lamb nucleus of the solitary tract (NST) while stimulating the epiglottis with 0.5 M KCl, NH4Cl, NaCl, LiCl, distilled water, 0.005 ...

Rat chorda tympani (CT) responses to CaCl2 were obtained during simultaneous current and voltage clamping of the lingual receptive field. Unlike most other salts, CaCl2 induced negatively directed transepithelial potentials and gave CT responses that were auto-inhibitory beyond a critical concentration. CT responses increased in a dose-dependent manner to approximately 0.3 M, whereafter they de...

Exposure of the apical surfaces of alveolar monolayers to acidic and alkaline solutions has been reported to have little influence on intracellular pH compared with basolateral challenges (Joseph D, Tirmizi O, Zhang X, Crandall ED, and Lubman RL. Am J Physiol Lung Cell Mol Physiol 282: L675-L683, 2002). We have used fluorescent pH indicators and a trifurcated optical bundle to determine whether...

We determined the effects of intracellular respiratory and metabolic acid or alkali loads, at constant or variable external pH, on the apical membrane Na+-specific conductance (ga) and basolateral membrane conductance (gb), principally due to K+, in the short-circuited isolated frog skin epithelium. Conductances were determined from the current-voltage relations of the amiloride-inhibitable cel...

The binding, internalization and degradation of 200 pM monoiodinated human atrial natriuretic factor-(99-126) (125I-hANF) by cultured bovine aortic endothelial cells (BAECs) were studied at 37 degrees C. 125I-hANF was rapidly cleared from the extracellular medium (t1/2 approximately 10 min), whereas preincubation of the cells in the presence of 20 mM-NH4Cl or 0.2 mM-chloroquine resulted in a si...
