Membrane-based gas separation processes are currently being implemented at different scales for several industrial applications. The optimal design of such processes, which is key importance their large-scale commercial deployment, has been extensively studied through parametric analyses and optimisation procedures. Nevertheless, the applicability methodologies generally limited by large comput...

Stochastic fluctuations of voltage-gated ion channels generate current and voltage noise in neuronal membranes. This noise may be a critical determinant of the efficacy of information processing within neural systems. Using Monte-Carlo simulations, we carry out a systematic investigation of the relationship between channel kinetics and the resulting membrane voltage noise using a stochastic Mar...

CAPS is a neural/endocrine-specific protein discovered as a cytosolic factor required for Ca2+-activated dense-core vesicle (DCV) exocytosis in permeable neuroendocrine cells. We report that CAPS is also a membrane-associated, peripherally bound protein in brain homogenates that localizes Selectively to plasma membranes and to DCVs but not to small clear synaptic vesicles (SVs). CAPS exhibits h...

Fundamental questions in neural coding are how neurons encode, transfer, and reconstruct information from the pattern of action potentials (APs) exchanged between different brain structures. We propose a general model of neural coding where neurons encode information by the phase of their APs relative to their subthreshold membrane oscillations. We demonstrate by means of simulations that AP ph...

A concept of a (directed) multigraphical membrane system [19], akin to membrane systems in [21] and [18], for modeling complex systems in biology, evolving neural networks, perception, and brain function is recalled and its new inspiring examples are presented for linking it with object recognition in cortex and an idea of neocognitron for multidimensional geometry.

The fast-growing ends of actin filaments push against membranes to create cell-surface protrusions and to propel the movement of membrane vesicles. Co et al. (2007) now show that the neural Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome protein (N-WASP) mediates dynamic attachment between membranes and the growing ends of actin filaments to sustain membrane movement.

New methods, essentially based on hidden Markov models (HMM) and neural networks (NN), can predict the topography of both beta-barrel and all-alpha membrane proteins with high accuracy and a low rate of false positives and false negatives. These methods have been integrated in a suite of programs to filter proteomes of Gram-negative bacteria, searching for new membrane proteins.

We designed a flexible probe to record both neuroelectrical and neurochemical activities (Figure 1). This probe has four microelectrodes for neural recording and a fluidic channel covered with a semipermeable membrane; the membrane is used for microdialysis in the brain. We measured impedance of the electrodes, and examined the leakage of dialysate from the fluidic channel in vitro.

In welded tubular joints, when the fatigue crack depth is less than 20% of chord wall thickness, the crack growing process is highly affected by weld geometry.&#10 Hence, T-butt solution and weld magnification factor (Mk) are applicable tools for evaluating the crack growth rate in this domain. In this research, the capability of Artificial Neural Network (ANN) for estimating the Mk of weld toe...
