Tailoring materials to obtain unique, or significantly enhanced material properties through rationally designed structures rather than chemical constituents is principle of metamaterial concept, which leads to the realization of remarkable optical and mechanical properties. Inspired by the recent progress in electromagnetic and mechanical metamaterials, here we introduce the concept of ferroele...

As socie ty becomes more comfortable discussing genetics and its related ethics, a new technology is blossoming in the background. Nanotechnology may speak the same societal language as does genetics, in that both technological movements involve tiny science and large imagination. In a way, it is natural—and almost inevitable—that the genetic revolution and the nanotechnology revolution be comp...

In this work, we present new results about the non-enzymatic detection of lindane by using CuO-MnO2 hierarchical nano-microstructures. The linear range for the determination of lindane is up to 700 μM with a limit of detection of 4.8 nM, which is much lower than for other non-enzymatic lindane sensors.

Plasmonic nanostructures with a negative Poisson ratio are demonstrated, having the unusual mechanical property of auxetics to expand laterally when being stretched. Using nanomembrane technology, auxetics are shrunk by orders of magnitude, giving simultaneous access to optical properties of plasmonic metamaterials, as well as auxetic mechanical properties on the nanoscale.

Synthetic physiological fluids are currently used as a first in vitro bioactivity assessment for bone grafts. Our understanding about the interactions taking place at the fluid-implant interface has evolved remarkably during the last decade, and does not comply with the traditional International Organization for Standardization/final draft International Standard 23317 protocol in purely inorgan...

PURPOSE This study evaluates the temporal sequence and growth factor release from platelet-rich plasma (PRP) combined with different bone substitutes (BS), to identify an optimal substrate for extended growth factor retention. MATERIALS AND METHODS PRP was clotted with bovine thrombin or thrombin receptor activator peptide-6 (TRAP). In addition, PRP was clotted using Allogro (Ceramed, Lakewoo...

Rapid controlled self-assembly makes DNA ideal for building nanostructures. A problem using hybridized intermediates in hierarchic assembly is their thermodynamic lability. We demonstrate a click-fixation technology by which robust hexagonal DNA modules can be made. This principle is applicable to a wide variety of DNA nanoconstructs.
